i just ordered a hardy perfect 4 for my sage method11'9 8weight switch rod. is that going to be overkill for capacity? i run a 550 grain skagit head on it!
I think you'll be fine assuming its a new Wide Spool Perfect. 11 ounces for that rod seems ok and capacity should be fine for 550 Skagit with plenty of backing and running line.
Weight/balance is what might be off. Totally depends on your personal preference. You tip will be up when swinging with this combo, not an issue if you prefer that.
I use a 4" perfect on an 8 wt 13' 6" spey rod as well (Meiser) and to me that is a perfect balance in both volume and weight. I'd agree it might be (only) a tad on the heavy side for a switch rod in terms of the balance point, but depending on your point of view it may be worth it.
