Has anyone ever seen anything like this, a wading fisherman wearing what appears to be a hard hat with a knitted mesh over it like a stocking cap. Several times now I've seen Steelhead fisherman wearing these on Youtube. Can anyone tell me what they are.

I have these for sale and I can sell you for 300$ and I'll throw in a top secret fly for another 15$. The hat is very hard and very covered in mesh, exactly how serious steelhead fishermen demand.

I would have to pass on the hard hat thing. That is just crazy! Is it for protection against hitting yourself?

Some lessons maybe?

I have a hard time watching people ski with helmets but that I can understand.

Could've used one a few times while casting heavily-weighted flies with the anchor too far downstream...

Where on YouTube ?? I've never seen any flyfisher using a hard hat. Working in the woods or on a drill rig, but we take 'em off when we go fishing.

This isn't the original video I first looked at, but its the only one I could find at this time. This man looks like he's wearing a helmet of some kind. What do you think. Being new to this type of fishing, I thought maybe it was to protect your head from boulders in case you slipped and got swept away by the currant.

David,

Sorry to disappoint, but it's a "Radar Cap". They have been around since the Korean War. They are made of wool or acrylic with a bill to keep your head warm. When you get to Oregon you'll see half the winter fly fishers wearing them.

Lmao I thought his beard was real at first glance. I think it's like a winter hat with a short bill but I wonder what for? Maybe the bill is there so they can rest a hood on it? I hate when it snows while I'm wearing a winter hat and my hood only goes out so far.
