8-14 feet of 20# maxima tied in 7-10 inch sections with blood or surgeons knots. Leave tags on and trim to suit length of grass. Personal preference is for @1/2 inch. We use 1 inch tags uphere in the winter on the frozen and snowy lake.

Yeah ...

It's a leader tied SPECIFICALLY for practice casting on a lawn, field, etc.

The reason for the long "tags" at the tie points of the section are to offer resistance on the grass to simulate an "anchor point" in the water for practice spey casting.

I think I got the main points.

The grass leaders I've seen in use leave the stubs 3-5"; longer than that and they're too flexible. In the larger diameters used in butt sections, these provide quite a lot of grip against the turf.
I've never tried it, but I think that plastic hair curlers might be a good substitute (more of a "grass fly").

Thanks for the update Bob, I'd never heard of grass leaders, but now I might just give a try as I have a large field across the street from my place.
