I use a grass leader @10ft - 12ft long made of 30# Maxima Chameleon. There's a blood knot every 1ft - 1-1/2ft or so, and the tag ends of the blood knots are left long (about an inch or so). With a yarn fly on the end it works great. You'll need to adjust your timing a little (or a lot depending on the cast) but grass leaders are really useful if you can't get near the water.
i was just asking dec hogan that ? last week.he and ed ward have won a few grass contests. he reafirmed what i had remembered from ed; amnesia 30 lb-10ft long -blood knot every 4 "-cut the tag ends at about 1/2" long.
The object of a grass leader is to momentarily grab the grass, providing enough resistance to approximate line-stick in water, right? Thinking outside the box, couldn't the same effect be produced by any number of objects at the end of a normal leader, of the right texture/weight/air resistance? Although I haven't tried them, how about a hair curler? A perferated whiffle-ball?...
