Lake Ontario equals alewives . When I was a kid and the lake was a filthy mess , the alewives would have a massive die-off and you could smell it from my parent's house 5 miles away . the beaches were covered with rotting alewives . now the water is clear 20' down or more , thanks to the zebra mussels . and the steelhead and chinooks keep the alewives in line . they were not there in the early '60's when i was a yout .
