I have inherited a 8/9 and a salmon Number 1 Hardy Marquis fly reels . Both are in amazing condition . It puzzles me that reels have been barely been used have some play ( in/out ) on both spools . I would appreciate comments on the play and any adjustment that can be made .Also what weight outfits they would be best used on . Thinking of using the No 1 on a five weight switch

I had some play on my 1970's Marquis 2, had my local reel repair guy add a spacer which elimiated the play. Love that these reels are timeless, and with a little love and care can last forever.

In the past, I've solved this with a very small wad of paper, pushed down to the bottom of the spindle (?) hole. Now I think I'd use a bit of synthetic dubbing: non-absorbent.

Hardy Marquis spool play

Thank for the advice . I think the suggestions you kindly came up with will keep these great old reels going for many years to come .
The ( in/out) movement of the spool is only minor but it would be great to get it fixed
