Has anyone ever noticed on some of your two tone fly lines the colors are smeared into each other. That's sloppy workmanship. If they can't do it right they should just make them one color. You try fishing them under a UV light at night, the colors between the head and running line are smeared into each other 10 feet or more. You can't tell where the head and the running line meet, and it looks like crap. Whenever you pay 75 to 100 dollars for a fly line it should be perfect. The only company I know of that seems to do it right is Rio, but some of these other companies are questionable. The next one I get one that looks like that I'm going to send it back as defective. I know its just cosmetic but I pay a lot of money for my equipment. I could spay paint my Meiser rod pink and it would cast just as good but it would look terrible. Has anyone else had this problem.

I can see distinct colour changes on my rio and airflo lines. Even if the colour is a bit off it doesn't matter to me as long as it's somewhat distinct. All my snowbee and Sa lines are good also come to think of it. Dont think ive ever closely inspected the thouh

line loading markers....

Find out where the sweet spot is on the running line in relation to whatever rod you are using, then mark a small segment of that running line where it comes to YOUR HAND...sweet spot every time no matter what the light conditions.
I also like the old Airflo Delta mint green and sunrise yellow shorts and longs...and the little black plastic tube that you would slide up and it would stop and stay at the approx area of the sweet spot for casting...adjust somewhat if you like..this was a very good idea.

I have an Airflo line that's half pink and half white, or maybe I should say half pink and half blotchy white, looks like it was cheaply done with Rit dye. Visually if it doesn't look good at all, makes one wonder what other corners are they cutting. What happened to quality workmanship!

David, was this line a recent purchase?

I just bought an Airflo 40+ (new version- ivory with orange running line), and noticed the same thing about the color change. Kind of smeared together for a few feet. It doesn't bother me to look at, however, of more concern was the fact that after I reeled it up the orange was on my fingers! Looked like I just finished eating some cheesy snack thingies!!

I do recall, a while back that someone had mentioned that they thought their Airflo line was staining their poly-leader.

I love my Airflo lines- pretty much all I use, as well as their running lines and leaders. Maybe they're just having some quality control issues as of late?

I would be much more concerned over durability over colour regarding quality.

$75-$100 for a line is cheap by current standards. You probably dont want to know how much some import lines are. Heck even some domestic lines are around 30% more than that

If it's the change from running line to head then put a marker on the running line where it reaches your' hand for the head to be in the optimum position - this helps if you fish on into late dusk as you can't see it at the rod tip anyway.

If it is denoting a density change on a 2 or 3 density head or DDC tip then a slow merge of the two is better as it provides a smoother transition than a sudden change which means improved turnover & a steady taper rather than a step down in diameter.

I think we get much too concerned about the cosmetic appearance of tackle rather than it's functionality. I'd rather a scruffy finish with the correct tapers & weight distribution than a beautifully finished line which doesn't turn over properly; although I agree that at the prices which some of the "premium brands" charge then I would expect perfection, but Airflo's prices are are lot more reasonable than these.

Regards, Tyke.

Blending and bleeding dye? - Yes. I've noticed that the color changes in MANY lines, including Rio, are not always perfect and they tend to gradually and irregularly blend from one color to the next. I've noted this blotching anywhere from a few inches to about a foot within the taper it is intended to mark. That or staining on the rest of the line from drying on the spool and it has never been an issue with me because I can see when the taper is coming up and it doesn't effect casting properties whatsoever. Markers are great. But if you are fishing in darkness when a light is needed to see - maybe a welded bumper on the running line would be better?

You probably don't want to weight your lines on a scale either!!!

A bit of staining on a cloth when cleaning is normal. But staining on your fingers from handling the line is another matter altogether.

I wonder David1123, if this is a recent purchase also: New from a dealer and not a used line from someone who might have attempted to dye the line.

Tyke makes some good points. I'm WAY more concerned about consistent coatings, welds, and a pleasant taper.

I like to place a small nail knot with 6-8 lb mono at my sweet spot. That way I can fish first and last light without worrying about colors.

I am very pleased with the quality of the dozens of fly lines/heads I have made by Airflo (along with the odd one [or ten!] from Cortland, Rio, Snowbee, SGS, Beulah, and Scientific Anglers).

We're fortunate to have so many high quality lines on the market for our varied purposes.

;ike everyone else, the color change is the least of my worries. more important to me, is durability and loop quality. also a line thats +/- 10gr or less from listed weight, shouldnt be too much to ask.

holding point

That's an excellent way to do it with the small knot. All my lines are heads and I use mono for running line which I incorporate a holding line with a small two turn blood knot which is the holding point. Makes fishing in low light a breeze everything is by feel.

Just bought a new line today with a rod and reel and it has a couple foot colour transition as well. I think it is just their way of making the taper as gradual and strong as possible. The line is a Snowbee Switch. One thing id ask of ALL manufacturers is to please label their lines. I now have 2 of these lines in different weights and other than putting them on the scale they look identical

Done this for years with my lines. None of this 'looking at the end of your rod' as there's no need. If you're using different head systems you may have to mark the shooting line two or three times. But no big deal, just use one/two/three marker bars to indicate where you stop with the different set ups.
