one vote for dad of the year.

big cheers,
shawn
Cheers, Shawn! I doubt I am deserving of the Dad of the Year title...I have a wife that reminds me of such :hihi:

That is just awesome !!
Congratulations Emma, way to go !!! Earning your spot at steelhead camp must have felt just amazing :):)

My hat is off to you for sticking with your daughter.
Well done brother, well done :)

Mike
Cheers, Mike! I will pass on the congrats to Emma. She was such a good sport those 3 days on the river.

Remind Emma that I hate her!

:)

Adrian, listening to her “try” to tell the tale of that first fish was incredibly cool.

You’re a great dad, btw.

Keith
Keith, you, my friend, are an inspiration to me. Over a dram of Glenmorangie, it was you that put the idea in my head of bringing my family to camp as you had done while your girls were growing up. Being an only child, I had no idea what to face with girls at camp (I knew boys would have no problem). When you mentioned that your girls loved it...I knew I had to give it a shot. Here I am, just absolutely grateful for the experiences shared to me from folk like you.

You're right, brother, they appear and disappear. Cheers and blessings to you and your gals.

As the father of a 4 year old girl who I'm getting into fishing as best I can I absolutely LOVED this. Pretty much everything I can hope for.

As the guy who just showed this river to a buddy for his first time, resulting in a 4 day skunkage, I absolutely HATE this. Well, so long as he doesn't see it I guess we're cool.
:hihi: I feel you. I am hesitant to go back to that river now in the wake of Emma's success. What if go back and get skunked on my own? What will Emma say? What will her mom say to me? Under pressure....

Second Guessing...

Tell that daughter of yours, thats a none too shabby off the wrong shoulder Single Spey cast and as for the fish?, well you never mind her should be prouder than a proud thing on National Proud Day during International Proud Year.
You simply just can't buy experiences like that.
Heartfelt congrats to the both of you, put a huge smile on my face I can tell you.
Yorkie.

P.S. NOW PULL YOUR FINGER OUT DUDE!, cant let a slip of a Girly show you the way home like that :grin2:.

Adrian it was great hanging out with you and Emma last week and what can you say such a great story. The smile on her face as you told the story around the campfire said it all. Looking forward to seeing you two up there next year! I can't wait to do something similar with my kids when they get older - hopefully a speypages post in years to come. A few pics to add below I'll e-mail you some more later.

As said above, definitely you get the dad of the year award it just doesn't get any better than this.

Cheers,

-John

This piece would make a fine photo essay in Swing the Fly magazine, or similar. My hat is off to you my friend. It shows me that one can have his heart warmed and be jealous as hell at the same time. I love Yorkie's admonishment too. Emma likes steelheading, and is learning to drive - it won't be long before she is stealing sips of your good scotch too. Enjoy.

Adrian,
Great story and incredible memories made on Emma's first die hard steelhead trip. Great job being daddy guide. Your unselfish investment in tutoring Emma and keeping her safe on the water paid off big time! Her first two inaugural steelhead on dry flies...who does that?!?!

Such an awesome accomplishment for Emma with raising, hooking, and landing those magnificent steelhead and great job of guiding by dad. We were all jealous of Emma's success, especially the guy who can only get hatch brats!

As I said, the river chose Emma! Most of us go indeterminate amounts of time for any opportunity to tangle with with those unicorns down there.

I am truly honored that Emma decided to try my flies. That little ninja in that big buck's mouth looks like a tiny speck! Afterall it is tied on a little size 8 mustad s80 (3906 equivalent).

Just a truly amazing trip for the two of you. Emma's fate as a dry fly steelheader has been sealed!

Look forward to seeing you both again on future adventures.

Todd

Beneath this experience between the two of you, lies countless hours, days, weeks, months, and years of time in relationship together. You've affirmed her strengths, helped reveal her passions, and taught her to pursue excellence. These are some of the richest rewards of parenting. Thank you for sharing your journey.

What a great experience!!!! Makes me very excited for the time when my son will be able to (and hopefully want to!) join me on fishing trips. Some good parenting right there!

Steelhead23, funny thing about the Scotch: I had a wee nip of Lagavulin from my flask in celebration of our last evening on a famous pool. Emma made this guttural sound behind me as the aroma of fine single malt reached young nares. I flashed a look toward the retching sound and laughed as she exclaimed, "Aaccck! How do you drink that?!"

Thanks for the kind words, Rich.

HandPlanedCane, great to see you again. Wonderful pictures. It was fun to share the campfire with you there.

808Steelheader,
She loved your pattern. I recall 2 moments: I tied on a Steelhead Caddis on her tippet one afternoon. This fly had actual feathers from Bill McMillan. The pattern was tied on a gold downeye gifted from Steelhead23. It was waking and muddling in and out of the surface, Emma rose a steelhead with it deep in a tailout but didn't connect. She then said "It doesn't stay up like the Wang".

At another time I tell her that I should have brought a tying vise so she could experience raising a steelhead on her own fly. Emma counters,"Why? There is only one fly needed and it's the Little Wang".

Great to see you and Wendi there.

Beautiful story Adrian!!

It was great seeing the older pictures as well, and her progression over the years. My little 10 year old caught her first unassisted trout ever on a dry fly on Fathers Day, and I was so proud and thankful, and that glow that lasts for a long time.

For Emma to accomplish this on such a difficult piece of water, on a dry makes it more unreal. It just goes to show sometimes its meant to be, and no matter what the difficulty or circumstances, you just have to give it your all and good things will happen....and memory of a lifetime made.

THAT right there, is what fishing is truly all about!

Cheers!!

idk what I expected when I scrolled to 'new posts,' but it wasn't this!

Congrats to her on the gorgeous fish, and to you both for the quality time. That story will live forever in the family.

Adrian, this is an epic thread. I am so happy for you and you daughter Emma. What an amazing trip you both had. I know that sometimes it is easier to leave the kids behind and get some 'me' time on the river. I admire your selflessness by including your daughter in your passion for dry fly steelhead. It takes time and patience and sacrifice. It is so great that she got to taste success more than once on a difficult piece of water. EPIC THREAD. Thanks for sharing this story with all of us. Cheers.
