I know this is a year away "BUT" it would give us all lots of time to plan the outing.
A few friends an I have been talking about holding a Great Lakes Spey Clave, possibly next fall, late Sept. or early Oct. We could hold it at Brant park camp grounds (Brantford Ontario Can.). The park is on the Grand River (about 3 hours from Detroit and 2 hours from Buffalo) There is lots of room there as well as a number of other places in the area to spey cast.
This time of year the Steelies are just starting to show up, If it's held before Sept 30th the upper river is still open for Brown Trout fishing (our season is April 30- Sept. 30) As well as Steelies and trout the river is an excellent Bass fishery. We have a number of Biologists in the area that work very close with the great lakes fishery, I'm sure they would be happy to join in and give us a talk on the subject. I know the reps for G.Loomis, sage and St. Croix, We could ask them to supply us with the latest products. maybe we could get the line companies to send us some lines to try out etc.
Your thoughts
Thanks Rick

i was floating the idea to do same here in Montreal.
Bob Mckenzie the Cdn rep for Sage offered to sponser the event( I can fwd his co-ordinates if you wish ?).Grand River sounds a little more central for a larger amount of Spey enthiusiasts .Also next year , I believe there's a cane-rod symposium, around may.

Hi Brian
I know Bob Mckenzie, I'm sure he'd be happy with it being held on the Grand. I hope there is enough interest from the boy's in the U.S. We have a good number of spey casters in this area, would be great to have some fella's come from Quebec and the East Coast. Maybe I can convince Dennis Grant to join us. He could fill us in on the FFF's spey cert. program. There is lots to do in the area, good dining, cheap motels, fly shops, loads of fishing, And Toronto is only 1 hour away.
Thanks Rick

Road Trip????

I would love to attend this. So, in that regard, I have a proposal. How about a road trip? I can drive and take a couple guys and their gear (Ford Exploder). But the hitch is that we leave early and fish along the way.

Also, while I prefer real beds, I am not adverse to camping. If we do the camping thing, then splitting the cost of gas, food, etc., both ways should be very reasonable.

I live in the Seattle area. If you live here in the Pacific Northwest (inc California), drop me a line if you're interested in seeing what we might work out.

Cheers,

Michael

Aaargh, thats during my sons high school football season, and I hate to miss any of his games if I can help it. This is my last son playing football, etc...

During football season I work my steelhead fishing around his schedule.

Got to get to Ontario for some steelheading but that state of Michigan keeps getting in my way.

GL Spey Clave

I'd be there in early October, & I'll bet some of the Milwaukee gang would also show.

hmm.....

I could try to make it around football. I am eager to fish the Grand for steelhead and salmon. We could possibly have a meeting the night before the first day and tie patterns and BS.

I know the Grand is large, would a mid weight spey such as the Orvis TL 12'6" 7wt and Orvis TL 12'6" 8wt be adequete. I could bring out the 14' 9wt fast action euro, but I don't know if it is too much for this river? I might be able to pick up a 13'6" 7wt if I get my hands on one for cheap!

I am already excited!

Eastern Spay Clave

Gentlemen.
I will be at the Southfield Fishing Show in March tying flys at the Keough Hackles booth. Not sure if Ricks coming or not yet.
If any of the Michigan boys are there, come and have a chat.I would welcome any suggestions you may have for the Clave.
At this point we are hopeing to use one of our local area Conservation parks were we would be able to set up camp.Trailers,pop-ups,tents,whatever you have.Another thought is to rent trailers from local dealers.Would any one South of the border be interested in renting one.
Any local guys reading this that that would be interested in renting trailers or pop-ups,or sharing one with someone else please contact me.519-740-3442
I will be talking to Rick this week to see what we can confirm,as far as dates etc.

Is there a date set for the clave yet????

I really want to make it up to the Clave this fall. I just need a date so I can lock in my vacation. I plan on taking a week off and doing it right. Problem is....I have to have my vacation requests in by March 1st :eyecrazy:. I know a lot can change between now and then. If the date can at least be narrowed down to a certain week I should be able to swing it. :smokin:

Heres hoping I can make it!!

Whats the closest airport a commercial plane can land it to the location ?

I see a mention of fall run steelhead being within casting
distance of the clave.

hmmm....

That would be nice if we could find some sponsers for this clave? Anyone alk to Mr. Harris yet, I dropped him an email but no reply. I did hear someone say he was going to South or North Carolina though, so I don't know.

Also, steelhead will be in during the clave if I am correct? Does the Grand have a good population of Salmon? I have heard that you can take these steelhead on dry flies and resembles a PNW stream. If so, that would be great!

I'd post the URL, but Juro will make me ask them to sponsor us. :hehe:
Or we could barter for fly-ins into the backcountry river systems with Dana :smokin:

I know it's only a joke, and please don't take this the wrong way... but now that you mention it maybe someday when our funding model and volunteer approach changes into something more official we can be liberal with free advertising for non-sponsors. Until then, we need to do what we can to keep sponsorship meaningful to our supporters.

That being said, the follow-up email rule only applies to businesses that might conflict with our need for flyfishing sponsors! Airline links? Not likely to be a problem. Neither are Pam Anderson look-alike escort services, etc.

I am open to new ideas, always...

hmmm...

Isn't there a Spey Clave on the Grand River in May in Waterdown, Ontario? Thought I saw this posted somewhere? Anyways, if so please inform me, I would love to attend this clave as well.

Also, since Michigan's rivers are somewhat smaller I only have smaller spey rods. Anyone who fishes the Grand please fill me in on what presentation and rods would be best for the clave. Currently I am setup with the following:

-12'6" 7wt
-12'6"8wt
-14'9wt
13' 8wt

I know the Grand is a larger river, but what works best in spring(May)?? Here I usually fish holes, chutes and runs with indicator nymphing methods with a spey, while using sink tips to swing speys when the fish gravel up.
