I've managed to complete the bulk of the editing on the member DVD. The DVD LE will be @ 50 minutes long. I need another 5 - 8 hours to do a final clean up before I render the film then author and burn the DVD. I'm thinking that it's more like early - mid January before it will be in the mail, but we'll see how the next week goes.

I'm on winter break so I locked myself in my office for the past few days and finished up the editing and final render of the DVD. I've hit a few snags with the DVD authoring--things look a lot different on a TV screen than a flat screen monitor--so I'm busy tweaking the chapter menus right now. Once that's done I have to burn and label all of the DVDs which takes a lot of time so I'll do them in small batches and mail them out as they are completed. Hopefully I can start putting them in the mail in the next few weeks.

the NTSC version is now complete!

labeling and burning the DVDs now and I'll start to mail them out later this week. I'll go in the order of folks who responded to my request for mailing info, so some of you should see your DVDs in one to two weeks!

I'll have to re-author the PAL version which will take a bit more time so those of you in Europe will have to wait a wee bit longer...

notes on the LE version

running time: 51 minutes

focus: some of the basic and advanced stuff that other vids miss or don't give enough attention to. As much as possible I've tried to present the stuff in fishing situations and/or relate things to fishing rather than strictly casting, although this is not a "How to catch fish with a Speyrod" video. I've not tried to make a comprehensive casting video detailing the ins and outs of every cast--that's already been done a bunch of times by folks with much bigger budgets. I've also tried to "keep it real"-- not every cast is perfect, and this is intentional. Mostly it's my take on things from the perspective of a casting instructor and Speycasting angler. Oh, and there's some fish porn to.:)

I hope you enjoy it!

Full Release Version

folks,

while some of the DVD talk on the website will be about the upcoming Full Release Version of the DVD, I wanted Speypages members to know that I haven't forgotten about you! I'm going to make the Full Version of the DVD available to members at a greatly reduced price. More details when I have them!

Received the DVD yesterday. Watched segments of it and it looks nicely done. But where's the guitar music from the trailer :D

thanks for the note Gillie!

The Speypages Theme (trailer music) is part of the DVD intro. Navigate to "intro" on the menu or select "play all' and you get it!

I'm interested to hear feedback (positive or otherwise) from Speypages subscribers.

One question I have is the mix between instructional stuff and fish porn. I've found some purely instructional DVDs to be a little dry, while ones that include fish porn sometimes overdo it.

Speypages DVD

Hi Dana:
I received the DVD yesterday and had a chance to look at it.
First of all, thank you very much. It is immediately clear that a tremendous amount of work has gone into it.
I think it also shows your background in teaching. Most of the instructions are very clear. The quality of the filming is very good. I also like that you refrain from being dogmatic, for instance, when you discuss the stance or different styles.
It would have been nice if you had commented a bit on the equipment, lines, leader, etc. But maybe that'll come later.
If I have a criticism it is the section on one handed Spey casting. The introduction is alright and much to the point. However, I didn't find the casts that Paul performed with his back to the bank well executed. Moreover, they certainly weren't fishing casts. There is no way that the line landed in a way that permitted the fly to fish. But admittedly he was in a pretty tight spot. Henrik Mortensen in his DVD "Perfect Cast" has a similar segment and actually does a very good job in catching several salmon. But again, that was Iceland, the land of the plentiful.

Overall, I am very grateful for the DVD, and I enjoyed watching it very much.

Tom.

thanks for the feedback Tom!

I agree that the single handed section is a bit weak. I wanted to touch on single-handed stuff rather than dive into all the detail as I think single-handed Speycasting has been covered very well by Simon and a few of the others. I might actually drop single handed stuff from the longer DVD as there is so much to do from the 2-handed perspective.

One of the big challenges is to avoid simply re-hashing all of the other DVDs without missing anything important!

How did you find the pacing? Did any sections seem too long or too short? I also wanted to break up the purely instructional stuff with a little fish porn. Did that seem to work ok or did it take away from the instructional stuff?

Dana,
Just received it last night. Poured a large dram of malt and viewed it with my daughter. Well done, we liked it, especially those shots at Spences, and the music, first rate. Still haven't found an application for the 360 but who knows what a little single malt on a slow day will bring.:chuckle: When were you at Spence's ? the water looked higher then when I was there in October. Add more fish porn, cut back on the long intro, and I would not cut out the single handed spey style portion it reinforces the concept and feel of line control. I was amazed at how fast my daughters picked up spey casting after playing with the double and circle cast on a single handed rod. I would also spend a little more time in your demonstration using tips.

It is all about the Hunt

Great DVD!

Received it Monday. Watched it twice. Put it on continuous play. Have not slept since.

Boss has called every day wondering where the Hell am I.
Wife thinks I'm comatose or at least very disturbed.

Dog really needs to go out!:chuckle:

So the first 130 or so have been mailed now. I'm mailing 10 PAL versions to 10 of you in Europe today, and then I'll mail out more PAL in about a week or so. Still have about another 60 or so NTSC to burn and mail to those of you who have signed up recently, and those will be sent out in the next 2 weeks.
