I am sure there are quite a few of you that use a double taper line but I never have. When lining up a rod how does the line wt rating of the DT fit in with rod line wts. Are they usually close or is it typical to upline or underline with them. Thinking about trying one out as a long dry line.

The best thing about double taper lines is that you can cut them in half in the middle and make two good lines out of them. If you attach a butt section to the place you cut the lines apart in the middle you have a bass bug line, and now you have a line you can really get serious with.

A couple examples

Riffle:
I use DTs a bit. For my old 9140-4 sage which is actually a 7/8 wt, I use a standard 90ft DT9f single hand rod line. I use the same line on my Echo Classic and DECHO 6126 rods.

I also have a CND 7/8/9 DT which a very nice line and it goes on my Sage 8136 IIIe. I just cast that combo today in fact.

So, it seems for DTs in single hand configuration, upline one or two line weigths. With spey type DTs like the CND or 3m Salmon, go with your rod wt designation and you should be ok.

Hope this helps,
Todd

There is nothing like having a few dozen line weights and types and trying them all until you arrive at what works best for you and your rod. Don't pay the stupid price, and instead add anything you can find for dirt cheap to your arsenal.

An ordinary 82-90-foot double taper...

...Can be converted into a versatile spey line: Cut off most of one end's taper; add a loop for sinktips and the cut-off tip. At the remaining tapered tip, add an attachment loop. You can pull this line off the reel, detach it from the large loop in the backing, rewind it, reversed, onto the reel in about two minutes and fish an intact floating tip. Or, splice some running line onto the tapered tip, and you have a tip line longer than you can cast.
