My season is for the most part over until next spring, so thoughts turn to flies to tie for next year, and maybe a new rod (or two?). I have always sold single-hand rods that were starting to collect dust in the closet, figured someone else could use them and I can use the $ for a new rod, except for the rare few that have sentimental value. End result is I do not have a large collection, but do use what I have kept. But never do this with two-handers, always seem to keep them around. Have one I have not used since my first year at the two-hand game, and another that I do not get along with very well.

What do you do? Are most of you sellers or collectors?

Seller. I’ve even sold some I said I never would and in a couple cases, regret selling. The T&T 1307-3 and the Sage 8150 come to mind. All were sold to finance another rod or reel. Still doesn’t seem to help me thin the quiver much as I think I still have north of 15 double handers.

In the past I was a buyer/seller...but as I've come to "know" what I like and don't like equipment wise now I'm mostly a buyer.

Buy and sell until I think I have my quiver dialed in. I’ve sold or given away lots of rods this year and that was stuff that was not getting enough use. Other rods that were gifted to me will never be sold but I may give them away or put them on permanent loan as a few generous folks have done for me.

I'll never sell my father's SH bamboo or his favorite Medalist reel.

In terms of DH rods, I've got a Meiser 5 weight for summer, a 7/8 MKS for winter, and a 15' 7/9 weight for big rivers. I don't need/want more, and don't plan on selling any of these. We've become close friends!

Then again, I'm a Scot, so what do you expect. :wink2:

Buyer, since I work as a casting instructor I'm always picking up rods and don't sell them because it's nice to have a true variety of different actions, size, and weight rods. I have my "A team" set of rods I rarely let others use that fish with personally more than the rest of my fleet but I do enjoy casting everything and knowing I can constantly and consistently change between rods and cast them well. And yea....i might have been called a rod hoarder a time or two lol

I’m still a newbie at the TH game, but I’ve bought and sold a bunch of rods buying second hand us a great way to find out what works and what you can’t manage. Presently I’m in the process of getting my TH quiver set up for this winter. After tomorrow, I will own six TH rods with two being trout Speys and the rest for steelhead.

In the one-hand world, I’ve bought and sold at least 50 rods over the last 40 years. Right now I’m around a dozen and still fine tuning.

That's my confession out of the way, I have sold a few rods in the past, but only a few, so I'm currently at 2 dozen double handed Spey rods of 12 - 16 feet plus another 4 purpose built switch rods of 10'8" - 11'6" & 7 long single handers with built in extensions of 10'6" - 11'4".

Anything of 10 feet & less (& I have quite a few) I just classify as a straight single handed rod, irrespective of whether it has an extended handle or not.

I think the second hand price of many rods is so low that I'd rather hang onto them as spares, loan rods to pals, & for the memories.

Yeah, I'm single, I can get away with a house over flowing with fishing tackle.

In the past I have owned some exceptional rods that I thought I would never sell and would be a part of my quiver forever.
Alas, after becoming enamored with the performance and craftsmanship qualities of Bob Meiser and his team, I made to conscience decision to exclusively own and use Meiser rods.
Therefore to help fund my addiction, the quiver needed to be dispersed.

I fall into the seller/buyer category like many of us I guess. I gave up on being sentimental about equipment a long time ago. If the rod or reel has been collecting dust for an appreciable length of time...that means one or the other is ready to be turned over for cash. That usually goes into buying some other piece of equipment or perhaps feeds my desire for some of the materials I use tying classic salmon flies.

Occasionally it comes down to an offer you can't refuse...case in point. I had a 7'0" 4 weight Garrison bamboo rod I got from Mr. Garrison in the early 1970's. It was locked in the safe and had been for a number of years. That rod was fished regularly in the beginning...christened with a 3 pound Letort Spring Run brown trout...but as its value began to increase exponentially it was time to retire the rod. When I received an offer of 5 figures...need I say more? That has been the case with a few other collectible rods as well. However I still have some cane rods I trout fish with along with a few graphite rods...but no cane, only graphite when on an Atlantic Salmon river. That is what works for me.......

I'm a fly fishing hoarder. I rarely part with a rod but, materials are my jam. I've sold a little recently to fund my trip to the tying show in Albany, Or. this spring. Planning to spend a few weeks in Oregon. Hope to see you guys there.

There are a couple of rods and reels I have sold that I wish I had back...

I have tended to own gear for a while and end up selling to upgrade or as my interests change (clicker vs drag reel for instance). I've settled in to a Meiser groove and I don't see myself letting any of my current two handers go. I'll more than likely add a couple / few in time, but I am very happy with these rods I have and everything about doing business with Bob. I can't say I have any regrets on rods I've sold and fortunately have been able to replace a few reels I've sold in the past and having learned my lesson don't plan on selling the ones I have. As for single hand rods...all I own are RPL's and there's probably a dozen sitting behind be and I'll plan to keep em all...paired with same era Lamson LP's.

Sell or keep? With single-handers, neither. I would simply break them. <vbg> Developed a bit of a reputation at my favourite shop at one point. It meant putting up with some relentless teasing. Well deserved no doubt.....

For whatever reason, I seem not to break 2-handers.

Do not own enough 2-handers yet to have any for sale but I like the concept as you never how these rods will suit you until you actually fish them over a period of time.

If I've got a favorite rod (or anything really), I'll always migrate towards that item when it's time to put it to use. If I had 2 or 3 of similar items, I'd still migrate towards my favorite. My current 3 rods are specific for time of year, size of quarry, and size of river, and each will handle a range (1-15 lbs, 10-30 lbs, etc), so adding another rod wouldn't help me, and I'm too frugal (read cheap) to have more than I need hanging around.

Except whisky! I'll drink 'em all at one time or another, or one of my mates will. :roll:

Collector I guess. Am up to 21 Sage DH rods & still will buy more as they get discontinued. Cant afford new!. These include all the way back to Brownies & up to the last to be outdated. Love to get out the older rods at times, just to remember how we cast in the old days.

In the spirit of confession, I have sold at least four rods I have purchased for a second time. Two were mistakes both times, shouldn't have bought them, and two were coming to my senses and realizing those original rods were as close to perfection for the way I now cast as I'll ever get. The first time I bought those two, my skills weren't up to what they are now and I thought I could cast better with a different rod. Lesson learned, buy a rod and learn to cast with it. Then fish it until you run into situations where a different rod is needed. Then start buying. Yes, you will still amass more rods than you need, but you won't have spent money foolishly chasing perfection before you were ready to recognize it.

Both, though reluctant to sell. I've sold my premiere DH rods, keeping only the Orvis that no one wanted to buy (thankfully). It is a great rod, made before Orvis started cutting corners on their spey rod construction. I won't part with it now, having reached equilibrium of sorts and learning to appreciate that which I still own.

With the single handers, strictly a collector. For whatever reason I am simply unable to part with any of them. I plan on passing them down to my son and grandson someday. Same goes for my reels.

Nice thing about it all, I am set for life with the equipment I now possess - no more need to buy rods, though I could use another spey reel. Even there, I am good with the gear short of the expendables like lines and leaders. Right now, flies are keeping me broke.
