Over the past year, I have purchased some Spey-sized reels on eBay that have backing on them. In at least two cases, the backing looks new and usable. My question is this: Is there any easy way to tell if the backing is 20 lb or 30 lb? Thanks for the help.
If both are dacron backing, the diameters are quite different, and they roughly approximate monofilament. The 30 lb dacron should have a diameter similar to a steelhead/salmon leader butt (~30 lb test), whereas the 20 lb dacron diameter approximates a leader midsection-tippet area (~15 lb test).
If you are asking about testing the strength of the material, I can't help.
