I wonder if anyone else is as frustrated as I am with this system?

I like to plan my summer fishing trips well in advance, especially if it involves friends accompanying me. Local trips, no big deal, but further away - I don't want to wait until the last minute.

Deschutes permits are released 180, 30, 14, and 5 days in advance of your planned trip. Holding 4 one-day passes est verbieten!

Planned trip is for non-motorized weekend (Aug. 13 - 16).

So, if I apply for a permit based on my last planned trip day (Aug. 16), 180 days in advance, I realistically only have a chance of getting THAT day, because already the 13th and 14th are booked to the max! That means I'd have to wait until one of the later windows opens up, and then someone else in our party would have to try for the remaining days. And that may or may not happen. If it doesn't, I'm out the $$ for the permit I got, and the trip is off!

Have any of you had luck with this system, and if so, how? I'm not a complete nong, but staying within the established guidelines, I don't see how you can plan a multi-day trip long-range.

thanks,

Bob the confused

Check with Mark Backman @ flyfishusa.

Mark runs a guide business on the river (power boat) and I think he can only book two out of every four weeks. His normal 'camp' is 'The Dike' about a mile down stream from the boat launch.

Power boat or not he probably can give you the 'skinny' on how to game the system. Trying to run almost any bit of that river in one day would be damned near impossible ... if fishing was going to be involved.

Bob, I just looked at the web site and it looks to me as the limited access is not open from the 15th Aug going forward, I do not think the weekend of the 15th Aug is 180 days out but my math could be wrong. You can call the Prineville BLM on Monday and ask them (541) 416-6700. Good luck with your trip.

I think I was looking at the permit calendar all wrong!

Up at the top, is states that the blue numbers are permits AVAILABLE. I was reading it as blue = permits GIVEN!

Maybe I am a nong! :Eyecrazy:
