Hi Folks,

I cannot seem to find a complete (mostly complete anyway) list of Spey line weights and head lengths.

Both Speybum and Peter have done a great job on many lines on their respective sites.

But these lists are not complete. Can we anoint one of these the "Master" for Speypages and then kick off a concerted by all of us here to keep it updated?

These lists are tremendously useful when trying to determine new lines to try. And heck, if there are going to be dozens of new rods coming out soon we are going to need up-to-date resources like these .

Well after winter settles in and I finish the fly pattern upload stuff I was kicking around the idea of a member driven rod and line database. We would have lists of all rods and lines that would could be continually updated by the forum members as they get new rods and/or lines. Members could save comments on rods/lines and list line matches for rods for others to refer to.

Was thinking this would be the best way to have a continually updated knowledge base that spey casters could go to to see what lines may match their rods and vice versa. Of course all the line specs would be uploaded as well for reference.

If the members think this would be a good thing let me know and I will tackle it in the next couple months.

I should be able to help soon.
At the Loomis rod testing that Rick and I just completed with Steve Rajeff,Steve Choate,Chris Seipio and Marlow Bumpus we used as many of the retailers lines as possible for the test.
I will try and do an Excel spread sheet for this week and send it on.

JD's list should be at the very start of this data base as it was the original list.
I know that it was in existence in 2001.

Not to mention that Rio allows going from line to rod (vs rod to line) on their fairly extensive lines for rods data on the Rio site, which has been a standard for matching lines to rods and should provide quite a bit of additional "seed" data.

Sounds good. Just email them to me and I will make sure it gets in there. We need all the data we can get. This will be an interested project. Started a rough sketch of the database design last night. It still may be another month or so before we can start but when done we should have quite the kick ass spey line/rod information system.

In the spirit of this thread, does anyone know what may be happening with regards to a standardized spey line weight numbering system? There was discussion of this last fall/winter here in the forums and I remember Bruce and Simon saying something about such a standardization being discussed by their respective line companies along with a third line manufacturer. Was wondering what happened to this and if it is something we should be looking forward to anytime soon.

Sean, please consider the following when designing your database schema:

When viewing details for a rod, I would find it helpful if line recommendations were categorized with these three distinctions:

1) Stock lines recommended by the rod or line manufacturer
2) Stock lines with little or no modification recommended by board members
3) Stock lines that are heavily modified and/or line recipes from board members.

Great suggestion and something I was thinking about in the design.

Will also start up a new thread where everybody can start throwing out ideas of what they would like to see in an interactive line/rod matching tool.

So why is knowing the grain weight so important?

Rehash of many posts but every rod works best withing a given range of 'grain weights' out side the tip. R B Meiser is no longer calls his rods a 7, 8, what-ever on the rod butt; he's listing a 'range' of grains.

Not to mention, the line weights posted on the box are .... :chuckle:

But that gets us back to item 1: by knowing what drives your rod best and the head length/grain weight you can make reasonable choices on choices of line(s) without shoot $75 bucks down the drain.
