Notes:
We moved the location to Gowanda for convenience, lodging, eateries, road access, etc. We opened up time for fishing on sat AM and sun PM, so you can get the time on the reservation waters you want before and after. This agenda is subject to revision.

Registration is required You can just reply here, there is no fee to attend. We need a headcount for the Sat video / presentation dinner, planning for number of rods to have ready, and general planning purposes.

Clave Agenda

Date: Oct 2-3
Location: Aldrich St Bridge, Gowanda

Saturday 10/2:
(morning fishing or private lessons)
12:30pm - 3:00pm : Spey Casting Presentations from Instructors
3:00pm - 5:00pm : Rod sampling, Interactive casting tune-ups with instructors
5:30 - 7:00pm : Video analysis and group dinner, location TBD (in Gowanda)

Sunday 10/3:

1:00pm... Interactive casting tune-ups with instructors, casting open house
(morning fishing or private lessons)

Area Lodging:
http://www.holimont.com/displaylodging.asp
Suggested: Microtel Inn & Suites, Springville 592-3141

Private Lessons:
There is still room to join my small private lesson group. Full morning on Saturday with a Sunday follow-up. Group lesson cost is $400, up to four students so can be as little as $100 per student depending on participation. Rods and handouts provided. Optional video review from this class can be obtained after class by mail if interested. Please PM me if you would like to participate.

Videos:
We will be making a home-video of the presentations, candid video analysis of your casting during the clave with comments from instructors, or other useful tidbits. If you are interested in making a small donation to obtain this tape, the proceeds will cover costs for instructors and cameramen. Any additional funds will be donated to Knut Syrstad's Treatment Fund. This is not going to be a professional production but those who attend may find it useful and entertaining, we hope.

For those of you who register on the forum for this event, you will be eligible to win a set of 10 Spey flies. Juro will be giving them away at the Video analysis on Saturday night, if you have already registered then Juro has your name and you are in.

Charlie.

Clarification of Registration Process

Damn we all hate rules.

But here's our situation:

1) We need a headcount for the group meal and video session Sat evening for the room or can't plan it

2) We need a list of eligible names for the "door prize" drawing

In addition, it is a courtesy to those who are giving their time and efforts to organize and run this event to let them know how many rods to bring, etc.

So please let us know if:

A. you are coming to the clave,
B. which days you plan to attend, and
C. if you are coming to the dinner/video analysis on Sat evening

I suggest we hold the prize drawing at the conclusion of Saturday's on-river events so those who can not make the dinner can still be eligible for the prizes.

CND North America has just added an Expert 13ft 8/9 Spey to the list of Door Prizes to be drawn on Saturday.

BTW, after posting to the striper forum, I took the Daiwa 9 wt. out to the yard, strung up the Airflo WF-12-I striper line, and going overhead, shot it to the backing knot with ease -- hmmmmm.
yeah, but did you *catch* anything ?

I'll Try

I'm trying to schedule a week of work in Michigan (lilke I did for the May Spey Clave). I'm hoping to schedule it for the last week of September or first week of October. I'll drive up the the clave then drive over to Battle Creek. Its a long drive from Maryland, but might still drive up if I can find someone else to drive.

To Wet Your Appetite...

Count me in.
I thought you might want to see what the Cat is all about this was the first of Oct.
two years ago, not far down from Gowanda.
I'm pretty sure she was a wild fish - judging by the fight we had and how clean and perfect her fins were. (why does that sound dirty..)

Anyway, I've been on the Cat for years, and I would gladly help with any questions about this area and the fish, in exchange for whatever I learn from the clave
*But Charlie , Brian, and Nick should cover things nicely. There's a lot of experience in these guys. Are we going to the Pizza Plant for an after party, Charlie?

I'm definately in for all day Sat. and possibly Sunday

See ya there!

Juro,

Alberto Ray asked me to sign him up. He is probably one of New York’s greatest wildlife artists. He specializes in Salmon and Steelhead. Hopefully, he will bring some examples of his art to show us. It is quite spectacular. Please add him to the list. ;)

Thanks, Charlie.

I am directionally challenged. I can use MapQuest to get directions to Gowanda, but I need directions from some easy-to-find place in Gowanda to the spot where the Clave will be held. (Maps from the air are useless to me. I need directions in English.)

It also occurs to me that I am no longer clear as to whether the Clave is still being held on Indian land. If it is, I will need directions to wherever we are to obtain passes as well.

Thanks.

This isn't necessarily the most efficient, but it's pretty easy:

Most people come into Gowanda on 62. If you're coming from the north/ Buffalo/ Rte 39, Rte 62 will enter the village and after several blocks swing sharply right to cross over the Catt.

Just past the Catt is a stop light controlling traffic at a Y in the road. You're in the center of the old village with brick buildings, etc.

Take the right-hand side of the Y. Drive several blocks until you get to Chapel Street. Make a right.

Go to the end of Chapel Street. You'll see a sports field in front/front-left of you.
Turn left.

Right past the field you will come to an intersection. The street crossing yours rises up on a bridge to your right to cross the Catt. Cross the intersection.

Immediately past the intersection there will be a narrow dirt lane on your right. It is between the bridge and a very small creek in a stand of trees. Turn into the lane. You should see the creek ahead of you.

Drive to the creek and park. The parking area extends under the bridge and beyond it, tho if there is a lot of water on the ground, be careful if you're driving in a vehicle with minimal ground clearance.

It also occurs to me that I am no longer clear as to whether the Clave is still being held on Indian land. If it is, I will need directions to wherever we are to obtain passes as well.
Thanks.
Rte 438 is the main drag through the reservation, generally running east-west from Irving on lake Erie to Gowanda. There are several stores/gas stations along it that often sell reservation licenses. The most reliable outlet in terms of being open and having licenses available every time I've been there, day or off hours, is the gas station/convenience store inside the Y formed by the split of Rtes 20 & 5, right about where 438 ends in Irving and just north of where the combined 20/5 road crosses the Catt.

Greg - thanks

Smolt -

The clave is not on the reservation. You do not need a license unless you are actually fishing. We will not use any hooks on clave rods, therefore you will not need licenses if you are only attending the clave.

The location is downtown Gowanda where Aldrich St (bridge) crosses the river for Mapquest purposes.

See you there.
