Has anyone tried the new Carron Rods?

I have just returned home from the River Dee after a pleasant days fishing, its the first real chance I have had to try out my new Carron rod, what a cracker!!,and a nice 12lb sea liced Spring Salmon to test it out, well impressed!!.
Has anyone else got one?and how do you find it?Which butt do you find best for intermediate line fishing?

Looking forward to the answer's to your post.

I've heard quite abit about the rods from Steve Choate and Way Yin. All good.

At the Charity Clinic Steve had one of the lines on a 10-11 wt rod. THAT BOYS AND GIRLS is one heck of a line!!! I hope it goes well with a manufacturer picking up and running with what's obviously a grand bit of kit.

Carron fishing tackle

Fredaevans
After reading your piece about a manufacturer picking up and running with the Carron Kit,I got quite concerned!!,especially having a lifetime warranty with them for my rod!!.
I contacted them today and they responded with amazement, assuring me business as usual whats the problem?
It was quite a re-assuring call, they even managed to sell me 5 new floaters and 3 intermediates for my buddies!!,not a bad result for an inquisitive phonecall to a very helpful female on the other end of the phone. My buddies will be over the moon as they have been trying to get hold of some of these lines since the season closed. My casting wont look as tidy as theirs now as we will all have one!!
The lady who sold me the lines told me that she had just taken delivery of 1000 new lines of each size from their factory and they are selling like hotcakes due to the demand in the uk mostly from gillies on scottish rivers,so I have 5 happy bunnies who can tie all my flies for me now in return as my eyes are shot!!:) :)

Had a cast of Ian Gordons Carron rod which he used in last years Musto, very nice indeed and incredibly light for such a long rod. Purchased one of the Jetstream lines, a 11/12, very happy with it on the long rod, my favourite longer belly line.
What beat on the Dee did you get your fish on?

Hi Paul

sounds like you are a very serious angler ,with both 15 and 16 footers, did you go 3 piece or 4 piece?
How good was the Alta?,is it as good for quality hefty salmon as we all read about and dream off.

Lummels, to paraphrase 'Mark Twain...'

"The reports of my death are greatly exagerated."

The rods are not readily available in the US (at least not to my knowledge) but the lines are starting to raise a considerable number of 'eye brows' as fellows get a chance to cast same.

Had my opportunity to work one last weekend; impresive to say the least. One shop in Carnation, WA is now carrying them as regular shelf stock. First/only that I know of at this time.

But from a slight trickle ... to a mighty river?

15' carron rod

hi lummels, its better than its cracked up to be! 3years ago i caught my best 38lb, but my host not to be outdone, caught a 47 1/2 lb fish made mine look like a tiddler. fish in 20lb + are routine! i prefer 16'+ rods but much of alta fishing on our beat 'sautso' is from boats, casting {NOT HARLING} and 15' is ideal for that. i have 3 piece carrons, just me, not neccesarily best. tight lines paul

Sounds like Heaven

Hi Paul

Im sure that must have tested your rod and reel to the limit!! plenty backing I trust, disc drag or ratchet?
Is sinking line the order of the day at sautso off the boats or do they fish lighter floaters,Ive thought about trying the Alta for about the last 10 years but work commitments and bank managers have never allowed me to get round to it
I beleive sautso is a "dead mens shoes" syndicate!would I be far off the mark at that

alta

hi lummels, yes i guess it is dead mens shoes, but every year someone goes sick or something and if you've been nagging frontiers hard enough the odd chance comes along. i was very lucky and met a couple of really nice norwegian fishers in tdf a few years ago. one thing leads to another and now i get to fish orkla, malselva, alta, stjordal thru them and their friends! depending on pool and speed of current which varies a lot we go waking full floating to floating with fast sink polyleader, to intermediate with fast sink poly. i use bauer m7 reels, 600 yds 50lb backing, [disc]. my best fish took 300yds plus on first run! follow in boat and go ashore to finish! copper evans tail fire fly, now famous on alta! keep praying! paul

I beleive in a previous thread you mentioned the CND 16/7Specialist,how does it compare with your Carron 16 footer?
Do you or anybody else out there know who supplies them in the UK,as I wouldnt mind trying one out.

New lines

Spent a days fishing with Ian Gordon in March. This guy knows how to desgin (and cast) fly lines. He's currently designing a new range of lines which will be out soon. They'll be less expensive as well. These lines are the best I've ever fished with, and I've fished them all! Can't really provide anymore detail than this, but I'm sure you'll hear more in the near future. I'll be buying one anyway.

BTW Lummels, do you fish with Brian Simm or is it Lower Crathes you fish?

I fish with Brian and was there week 22nd March for 3 days. Great fishing!

cheers

Storlaks

Ive just got back after a few days fishing and saw your thread.
I have fished Brians beat in the past,I also fish Bob Harpers beat.
That wasnt you nearly casting your fly into my waders on the Floating Bank on the 23rd March was it.?
Ian Gordon played a big part in the designing of the Carron 15 footer and the Jetstream line and he is a fantastic caster, one of the best, I think it will take something very special to better it!!
P.S. the Dee is fishing very well.

Lummels,
fished your pool the other day, but the water was too high so no success. Nice pool though, which side did you fish it from? the cement walkway or the other?

Lummels, if i was casting that far it wouldn't have been me. I was fishing floating banks on 23rd though! It's my least favourite pool on Brains beat. The wind always seems to be blowing into your face!!!! Plus, it's the only pool I haven't caught (and released) fish in!!

Hopefully I'll break ma duck in May.
