Dec's "Passion for Steelhead" is an excellent source of information and a great teaching tool !!
Steelhead Fly Fishing and Flies by Trey Combs is another valued resource and considered by many to be the "Steelhead Bible".
A great DVD is Lani Waller's "Steelhead Legacy" that is filled with history and information. It's one of those DVD's you will pick up something new each time you watch it.
+1 on Steelhead Legacy, especially as on a first surface glance it might not obviously tick off the right boxes for a lot of people. Most of it is single hand and from 30+ years ago, except for some more recent stuff added at the end with Lani doing some indifferent spey casts. But where these DVDs shine is in teaching fishing techniques, which have not changed, and have nothing at all to do with your rod choice or casting system. He methodically goes through how to fish for Steelhead on the swing in most situations you ever will encounter, including a bit on waking/skating dries. His attitude about gear is pragmatic, and enlightening. I think to be honest I bought this one because it was on super discount, but no single DVD or book has taught me more about the practical details of fishing for Steelhead than that pair of DVDs. Perfect to get you over an initial hump if you don’t have a mentor who will spend hours with you on the river.
So if you want “Spey porn” look elsewhere, but if you want a master to show you the ins and outs of fishing in some detail, that one is it. Well, there is in fact some good “fish porn” in there.
If you like Spey Daze you will also likely enjoy Skagit Master 4. For great instructional DVD's (focused on fishing and technique) I really love John Hazel's "Spey Fishing Steelhead" (summerrun fishing) and Rob Crandall's "Winter Spey Strategies" TONS of good learning and information in these two.
Agree with the accolades for Dec's and Lani's books. I love them both. Trey Combs "Steelhead Fly Fishing and Flies" is the classic that got me into this sport and I believe is still just as relevant today. There are so many good books with different focus out there. The Wild RIver Press books "Wild Steelhead" are pricey but great.
