It might be too late to stop it but its never too late to voice an opinion. The proposed "Haul Road" running through Idaho and Montana moves me to take some kind of action and I was wondering if some folks here might want to get together ,when the weather permits, and have a bike ride/fish/fun along the proposed route. A sort of Bike Clave so to speak. I know some of us live far away, as do I, and might not see it as having any impact on them directly but I feel its well worth the cause. If your interested chime in and we'll figure something out in terms of dates and so on. Please don't turn this thread into a political debate if your interested lets share positive ideas and spread the word!

not a bad idea

it would be good to get the whitewater community involved as well...the lochsa draws alot of people during spring runnoff.

Yeah, good thinking on this Bash. I would love to ride down hwy 12, you could probably get a pretty good draft off some loggin' trucks. This is an idea worth exploring.

On a side note, I read an article a couple of years ago that you can ride from Lolo pass down to the Orofino area on old logging roads and rail-to-trail type deal. That would put you into some pretty amazing country.

Interesting idea

I'm not familiar with the area or river(s). Any pics? Is it all back country? Tenting it / what? Sounds like fun if the weather's right. Not so sure about the log truck drafting...

First off, how about enlightening me about the "proposal". Next, I'm all about back country / inaccessible, etc.
What river and what species? Steelhead?

Red's just dyin' to see some new terrain!

The issue here is a series of shipments planned by Exxon that would travel along Hwy 12 from Lewiston, ID, up the wild and scenic Clearwater river, (an epic steelhead fishery) and then up the also wild and scenic Lochsa river, into Montana and continuing up to the tar sands in Alberta.

The loads are huge, almost triple-wide:

And they would travel along a winding, two-lane highway (only at night). Exxon initially had over 200 (yeah, two friggin hundred) of these loads planned, passing through 5 days a week. Currently, they're looking at other options, including reducing the load size to allow them to travel along Hwy 95 and I-90 instead. The reason for the possible change is because of the problems experienced by the two similar loads (shown above) shipped by Connoco/Philips in transit to Billings, MT right now.

Hwy 12 has seemingly hundreds of sportsman's access points, but the agreement made with Connoco/Philips allowed them to close off access to any pullout 24 hours in advance, ostensibly to keep them clear in case the trucks need to pull over to let cars pass, but also to prevent opponents of the shipments (the "nuts") from causing problems.

Camping along the main Clearwater isn't ideal due to the highway, but there are some spots. There are plenty of hotels along 12, in the tows of Orofino, Kamiah, Kooskia, and Lowell. Poppy and the Red Shed are right there in Peck for all your double-handed needs.

The Lochsa is amazing too, with numerous established camping sites and all sorts of informal options. Has some hot springs nearby as well.

Hey Sixrivers, is that a GF HIFI 29er in the back of yer rig? If so, I am riding the same bike. You could do a road ride down hwy 12. I posted about a backcountry ride earlier in this thread. It goes! It is part of the Lewis and Clark Trail that could be supported with a 4wd vehicle.

Yes - I've still got the Bomber shock from my last 29er that I broke so that's why it looks a little different.

I think that was what perked my interest. I'm looking at a map...Clearwater and Lochsa are right on the highway - that's good for road fishing. Is part of the L&C trail along a fishable river?

Borderfly...never thought about dirt bike possibilities - I don't own one. I bet you're itching to ride! Another foot of snow last night?

There may be some trout streams along the L&C trail. The Lochsa is not really a steelhead river. There is a strain of wild fish that spawns around Fish Creek, but I kind of feel like they are protected, meaning the Lochsa may be closed to steelhead fishing. I very well may be wrong though. Lochsa is a good trout river and stunningly beautiful as well.

The L&C trail ends around where the Selway and Lochsa meet to form the Clearwater.

These shipments (the ones to Canada, at least) deal only in equipment to be used for extraction. I don't know the intended destination for the oil itself, but that would be able to be trucked in standard tankers which aren't oversized, and would be able to travel via ordinary highways.

The oil companies are hoping to use Hwy 12 because there are none of the overpasses or other height restrictions they would have to deal with on 95 and 90. That it's a tiny road along two designated wild and scenic rivers through the middle of Idaho wilderness doesn't seem to bother anyone in charge.

Chinook?

I love bikes and fish!
In June/July there's always possibility of chinook fishing along with westslope cutts.
