I'm just curious if there are times when a stripping basket is called for while spey casting whether it be in the river or in the surf? I wouldn't think so, but this Spey stuff is new to me and I am just wondering if I should pick one up.
For river fishing come up with a system to hold the coils of line. I hold 3-4 loops of about 10-15 feet of line. When making a new coil, I fold the line to the inside, rather than the outside. And keep your running line stretched out. Generally speaking I don't shoot more than 3 times the rod length, or about 45 feet; that's about 90 feet of line out the rod tip with a Skagit setup and a 15' tip, which should be enough for most situations. I just can't bring myself to use a stripping basket and with them you will get coils from time to time, anyway.
