For the last couple of years since 911 I have been having good luck carrying on my spey rods, without any metal case, on most US /Canadian airlines. I think the metal tubes were an issue so I used acardboard tube for the older Sage 14 foot rods. Since the charges for an extra "checked bag" are now ridiculously high, I ususally pack the shorter rods (36" section)in a large clothes duffel in a hard case. Then I carry on the rods that are longer than 36inches...I got stopped the otherday with a longer rod while going bonefishing and Delta says no more carry-on rods , with or without tubes, if rod is longer than 40 inches. I think this whole thing is really gate agent roulette, because once you have the rod inside the secure area and stay in side that area fon al l your flights, you will have no issues...but what experieinces are others having with spey sections longer than 40 inches? I think I may just ship the older sage to BC this summer fro my fall trip, and avoid the headaches..
