Casting Competition Rules

Gentlemen.
Below you will see the rules for the competition.
Please direct any questions or queries to Rick at,[email protected]
The cost to enter the competition is $20.00 which will go towards expenses for the clave.
First prize as Rick has posted.A GLX Two Hander.Kindly donated by Lorne Green from G.Loomis Canada.
All registered competitors names will go into a hat for other prizes.
Good Luck and have a go.What the heck.! :)

1.
The championship is open to all comers regardless of gender, amateur or professional.
2.
The spirit of the competition requires that participants use equipment considered to be “normal fishing equipment” rather than specialized or custom competition equipment. All equipment used should be typical, production fishing gear available from retail outlets.
3.
First prize will be awarded to the competitor who is judged to have cast the greatest distance using an approved Spey Cast. *
4.
Competitors may compete with any rod, reel and line provided they fall within the following specifications:
a. The rod must be no greater than 16foot 1 inch in length.
b. The reel must be of the normal revolving spool fly reel design
c. The casting line, or casting head, in the case of weight forward profile lines, may be of any length. Must be of a density that classifies it as a floater, in the opinion of the judges. The line must be an “off-the-shelf” production factory 9/10 wt. fly line. No line customization is allowed except for the lengthening of the running line. This lengthened section can be made of any material strength or density.
d. There must be a leader of no more than 16’ in length attached to the front end of the line and to this must be attached a brightly coloured wool or wool substitute tag, without weight, in place of a fly.
5.
Each competitor will be given one minute warm up and practice time immediately followed by the competition casting time. The competitor will make three casts off of each shoulder. The longest cast from each side will be averaged to produce the result. Each competitor must complete their casts within two minutes. Approved casts will only be judged during the competition time and competitors must reposition the line to outside the marker rope before their initial and subsequent casts within this time period. The distance will be judged as the landing point of the tag at the completion of each cast.
6.
Should the same distance be cast by two or more of the top competitors during the Finals of the event, then these competitors will take part in a cast off until a clear winner can be found. Competitors must use the same rod, reel and line in the cast off as has been used in the earlier stage of the Final.
7.
Failure to abide by any of the above rules and guidelines could result in the disqualification of a competitor.
8.
The organizers’ reserve the right to disqualify any piece of equipment that does not meet the requirement of these rules and/or the spirit of the event. Final decisions are at the discretion of the judges
* An approved Spey Cast will be deemed as:
1.---Any form of Roll or Spey Cast which incorporates an angle change of ninety degrees as defined with marker ropes laid out at the competition. The cast must fall between the marker ropes.
2.---The cast must involve an anchor that alights on the water. Overhead casting is not allowed.
3.---A cast during which some part of the casting line or leader alights on the water no further than two rod lengths away from the competitor, to form an “anchor and D loop” in the accepted casting sense.
The decision of the judges is final.

2005 Grand River Spey Clave

Gentlemen,
Slight change in the rules (my mistake)
Rods: 10wt max,(since most rods are double digits a 9/10 or 10/11 is acceptable)
Line: 10wt max,(since most lines are double digits a 9/10 or 10/11 is acceptable)
Good luck
Rick

2005 Grand River Spey Clave

Hi all
Neil and I spent the afternoon looking over the casting area's at Brant Park, we actually have three sites we can use this year. We spent quite a bit of time looking at how we could run the casting competition. The decision was made not to go with a 90 degree change of direction but rather a 30-40 degree change, left hand upper most, right hand upper most (much the same as Spey-o-rama's first year) this will give the spectators a much better view of the great casting and distances acheived.
Thanks
Rick Whorwood

2005 Grand River Spey Clave

Guy's
It might be possible to set up a small class with Ian Gordon and Gordon Macleod, on the Friday before or Monday after the Clave, what I'm thinking would be 8 students, 4 and 4, 4 hours with Ian or Gordon in the morning, 4 hours with Ian or Gordon in the afternoon. Basically you'll get 4 hours with each of them, these are two of the very best Spey Casters in "The world" At this point this is only an idea, please e-mail me at [email protected] if you're interested

HI Rick and Neil,
I will be there on the Thursday night, but got to go back on the Monday, i would be more than happy to take a group on the Friday, Sat or Sunday.
I will have a selection of Clan rods with me for everyone to try out, these rods have never been available at any other show, so it a great chance to try out some of Harry's hand built rods.
Cheers Gordon. :)
