Trust me, I don't care how long you've been spey casting ...

mashing down the barb is a 'safety' issue. Getting a barbed hook out 'you,' or your clothing, is a total pain in the A$$. First time I did that it cost $600.00 (I kid you not:eek:) in the ER. Never used a barbed hook after that bit.

As you're new at this be sure to keep your rod tip canted out about 5-10 degrees from vertical as this will direct the fly past you, NOT AT YOU. If you get the infamous 'Whack in the Back' 99% probably your rod was 'straight up and down' as you came out of the D loop.

Don't worry about distance when you start as most of the fish you may hook will be 30 feet from the bank your standing on. 100 foot cast (needed) is really pretty rare. Here in Oregon the one river where 'distance' pays dividends is the Deschutes. Damned fish could be anywhere. The Rogue? A few places below Grants Pass you really do need to chuck line as the holding water is on the other side.

If you are referring to the Lower Rogue the travel lanes are hella wide and the holding water is not defined. Maximizing water coverage with distance is advisable. That said, there are a few runs on the Upper Rogue where long casts find fish that aren't seeing flies.

You nailed it with that.

Been years since I've fished the bottom end of the river but at very low flows my fav was called 'The Mill,' or 'The old Mill.' You could wade half way across the river and be in not much more than knee deep water. Beautiful water right in front of you and blast away at every fresh fish that entered the river at high tide.

Only thing that was a tad spooky, the first time it happened, was the shallow draft 'mail boats' that would actually go up river BEHIND YOU!

Famous/Infamous post

One of our long time members used to post "the latch string is out" And a couple bottles of single malt would get you clean sheets & pillow cases at XX's B&B. Someone (who shall remain anonymous) also discovered tail gate parties at 2 Hands also goes over remarkably well. :chuckle:

Heath wise I'm now a long way past that now.

But there's a fly board just in side my front door, ditto the Motor Home, and your first visit you had to stick your fav fly into same. Better yet, then, I was a hell of a good cook.

Had as many as six or seven people flaked out on air mat's or the guest BR floor. Wife/Sig-Other was strongly invited to join; many did. Hell of a big breakfast, lunch was a bunch of stuff in a cooler and make your own sandwich. Dinners were simple, but lots of it.

Ladies, and some of the Gent's, really pitched making salad's, side dishes, deserts. Poker game later as the Ladies un=corked another bottle of wine. I'm told, just told mind you, they really could put this stuff 'away.'

Good times, very good times.

But I have no idea who Jimmie's talking about.

Yeah Ferry Hole Bar is accessed across from the old mill. Kind of a network of gravelly roads that will take you to Canfield Riffle, Clay Banks, etc. Lower Rogue has some of the best two hand water in the Pacific Northwest, at least in my mind. You can drive out onto most of the major gravel bars below Quosatana and swing a run for hours.

I make it to the Sandy clave regularly since it's in my backyard but I can't wait to make it to this event one day! This seems like more of a laid back and less structured affair. Looks completely cool.

Dicosmoecus - quick clarification though. You've never tossed a spey fly before? You've been on speypages longer than most of us and have hundreds of posts!! You're kidding around right?? :Eyecrazy:

Hope to see everyone at 2hands one day...

I am going to try and attend this year. I went two years ago and it was great fun, the people were great, demonstrations were very informative, and most importantly the brats were great. Plus Fred gave me the lowdown on where to do a little swinging before the event and I landed two nice steelies the morning of the event (first Rogue fish for me).
I will probably camp at Rogue Elk park or Joseph Stewart Park and make the drive in to Medford for the event. I might bring my pontoon. Anyone else bringing a boat that might want to do a float with me and show me some of the river?
