Great point about the reel seat. I think Orvis could probably remedy that pretty easily, but it is an issue.

I have the 14' 9 wt and it is a very nice rod. Feels like an 8/9 rather than a strong 9...

Thanks Blix

I think you are right. I love their new Helios single handed rods. Wow. Beautiful.

The Mission rods have a similar feel to them. I have had minimal tip deflection and they flex...

Hi Blix

I normally cast Burkheimers, but Orvis approached me last year and I have been trying their new Mission rods along with my Burkies.

I must admit, I prefer longer rods, so I received the...

I would just get a Burkie. They are made in USA by folks who fly fish. Best sticks on the planet. Plus, I don't like all the silly stuff Meiser puts on his rods, like feathers and wood handles, that...

Shop Waters West, for sure. I've been buying my materials there for 22 years. Their dye jobs don't let me down.

That said, all dye jobs will bleed to some degree and fade over time. But what you...

My best guess, after years of doing this, and the timing, is that it is a dark buck steelhead leaping from the water to try and remove leeches from its gills. That is very common this time of year...

I find landing fish by tailing, in about knee deep water or so, is most effective with smaller steelhead, typically under ten pounds. I can tail larger fish, but they have to be damn tired, and...

Rage 570 is my favorite

that said, you seem to prefer a heavier grain. i only use a 540 FIST on the same rod and think anything else would be too heavy. so you may prefer a heavier rage.

The control is a great reel. I love them for steelhead. Each has their own preference, but I like the ability to increase drag by using the handle rather than palming.

In regard to being robust,...

3', as someone else said, longer if river is clearer and lower. Shortest I go is 2', and that is very rare.

Offer what I can:

1. I use the 10153 -- it is not too big for steelhead. i used to use it more frequently when we had windcutter and midspey lines. it is slower, and of course, isn't much fun...

I don't know, I am skeptical. My simms boots are great, but all my patagonia boots fell apart within weeks of having them. And, danner used to make wading boots in the 80's and early 90's, and they...

It will work for smaller steelhead, but if you are consistently getting into fish that exceed 10-12lbs, then I don't like the 7 wt -- unless you are in a small river and they can't run really far....

Love the old St. Croix, was a powerhouse. Sage, well I never liked their older rods at all and felt the St. Croix 14' and 13' rods were better casters all around.

In fact, I still use the St....

Sorry, I didn't explicitly answer your question. I use Rage 420 up to 570g. I mostly use 510, 540 and 570 in winter and the 400's in summer/fall.

I do think 15' makes it more challenging for sure.

I use the Rage down to 420g and can cast 9' of t-11 with weighted fly pretty easily. I can even cast them with RIO scandi head down to 360g.

Interesting. I use the Rage all winter, it's almost the only line I use. It cast tips just fine, including t-14 up to 12'. It will probably struggle with longer (>12') and heavier tips, which I don't...
