Considering the geometry of the reel / rod / line when strung I don't know how you'd burn a pillar on a new Hardy Perfect unless you did it while "vigorously" stripping line off the reel straight...

MZilliox is giving you some very good info here. From my own experience I should have stayed with the longer rods while learning the basics but made the mistake of going to the shorter switch rods...

Another St. John question

I have the non-Mark II St. John and it can be switched to LHR but the check tensioner will be positioned to the rear of the reel. Can email pictures if needed.
