Testing is only good method to find "proper" load. Rod bend increase when casting distance increase. Line weight has interesting function when "proper" weight bends rod less than lighter or heavier...

I have not used it but I have thought it and simple solution could be "coroplast corrucated board" which is used on advertisements, signs etc. It should be free after use and comes few thickness....

I still sometimes weld but only Polyurethane coated lines. I don't try to weld PVC anymore because it is difficult to get good. When I thread wrap line sections together I can join PU and PVC.
