Golden Demon Featherwing

1 Attachment(s)
While putting stuff away on my always cluttered fly tying table, the remnant of a turkey tail feather intrigued me. The tips of the barbs were frilly, not at all married, while the bulk of the feather held together very well - as turkey does. I had basically thought the feather was used up as the sides of that feather had tied a bunch of muddlers, but those frilly ends fascinated me and I decided to tie a simple featherwing Golden Demon with the remnant. I forgot the topping tail and used orange bucktail as an underwing and used flat mylar for most of the body. Turned out pretty good and those frilly tips move around quite enticingly. Ready to fish. Tied on a #2 6XL hook.

This is money, Rich.

Still sorry for losing your fly to the rocks the other day.

Wow that is a nice rendition !! Looking at the date of the post, I must have missed it ... :o
I would have liked to have taken a copy of this to the salar hunt last fall ... I will pinch this on a long shank Limerick :smokin:

Very clean, classic look to this one. I dig it!

I just had to add one to my wallet while I was making chicken soup

I found a mottled turkey tail with split fibers, but once I cut my slips, the darn things married back together :chuckle:
I did this one with a two-tone collar, dyed orange silver pheasant over which is a light, bright orange hen.
Underwing is dyed orange arctic fox and an aft body of gold embossed metal tinsel with a fore body medium gold oval tinsel on a modern day Limerick.
I can see modifying this variation with a bit of wood duck for cheeks. But as is, it's quite fishy :smokin::smokin:

Very fishy indeed. I would give that a good soaking for sure.

A different hook for you Mike?

The hook is a Daiichi 2271 #2. It is a medium wire iron and marketed as a Low Water Dee Iron.
In my opinion, it is a very handsome iron. I like the looped down eye and the micro barb is easy to crush.
It is a stable iron, it keels properly on it's own, so it is well balanced. By dressing it sparsely, it has a good sink rate.
