I got my son out yesterday with that single-hand conversion and the 200gr. skagit max short. Put it behind some ridge running line. It was fantastic! He caught several nice trout all by himself, from start to finish. One was a nice hatchery that went home on the cast iron. He loved every minute of it. This hatchery was absolutely stuffed with bugs. He had a mouthful of bugs still stuck right at his mouth opening when we caught him and his entire mouth (esphogus?) all the way to his stomach, and stomach itself, was completely gorged. I was surprised. We were swinging a size 10 prince hare's nymph. In the middle of the day. My guess is that if we had been out morning or evening, he would have hooked 10+.
On that little rod, the trout are actually fun. I never thought I'd enjoy it, but with the right rod and set-up, I can see how it would be very fun. I'm waiting for the day we hook the indiscriminate steelhead on the rod. What a day that will be!

    Yes!

That's what we talked about in the parking lot. You must have had a long week! Lol. The grain window is actually 350-550. -- less than what I thought.

I have certainly went beyond the grain window in the past and I don't think it damaged the rod. Meiser's grain windows seem to be pretty forgiving. The 450 FIST would probably be the cat's meow on the 5/6. I think the 510 is going to give it a workout but it's worth a shot. With a poly, I think it's doable. I'll give it a try and send you a report.

    Hi Tim

You have a lot of casting videos. Do you have demonstration of skagit double spey off left shoulder (river left bank)?

    Thanks

I absolutely love throwing long lines, but there is something to be said about the simplicity of a properly balanced skagit line. I've been reading Dry Line Steelhead which has been a fun read -- it makes it even hard to hit the river with a skagit line. So I fished a bit yesterday after church and would you believe it.... I set my anchor upstream and just after the fly hit the water a giant steelhead rose up to slurp it down -- with snow on the bank - and thru water I already stepped through. I was speechless. Go figure.

I'm pretty sure I ruined any chance of a hook-up on the forward cast, because who uses a sustained upstream anchor to catch steelhead.

We should get out and shoot some more videos. It would be fun. I'll film you! We should fish, too, in about a month when decent numbers of fresh fish come in. I have a private spot that I would like to take you. River left.

Thanks for posting those videos. I am learning what Ed Ward said might be true... it is challenging to go from a short/mid belly line to a Commando. Two weekends ago, when the snows came and the waters got high, I decided to put on the Commando on my 11' switch and spend some time with it. This is breaking my rules, of course, because I really want to fish some mid-belly style lines. So here's the crazy thing. After spending about 30 minutes with the rod, it is casting further (and easier, I might add) than my mid-belly. It's so simple it should be outlawed. And the casts are beautiful to boot.
