Tied in hand

First and foremost let me start by saying that I am not belittling anyone that has the skill and patients to do such a thing.

I guess my only uestion would be why?

Maybe it's a Mt.Everest thing, why because it's there.

But to me it's like walking the 10 miles to work instead of using your car! or fishing with just the line and no pole.

The next thing will see is tying with both hands tied behind your back and blind folded.

Maybe, just maybe it's just pure jealousy on my part since I have the hardest time just tying crappy flies. This type of tying has me baffled, confused and at times I just do not want to open the thread for fear of seeing something I just can't do on a damn vice.

Please by all means keep doing what you do, maybe someday it will inspire a whole new generation of fly tyers. Remember though you will be part of destroying a fly fishing industry.

This of course was just mere banter and I can only hope to be as good as the few that has "Tied in hand" as part of their thread.

One of the pluses as I see it is its potential in helping to develop a vice-like death grip with one's hook-holding hand.

I started to tie in hand because of a medical condition that would not allow me to raise my arms up to the vise . I lost complete fine motor skills and sometimes even all movement that would cause extreme pain shooting up into my shoulder during any attempt at the vice . My arm would become locked and needed to "pop" back into position . This of course was extremely painful and I risked tendon damage each time it happened .
It was in this section of the Speypages , that a once upon-a-time member named caihlen (Ken Campbell) , inspired me to try tying in-hand . I found that by gripping the iron and bringing it in close to my body I had no pain in my arm . This method allowed me to pursue my passion playing with the feathers and irons .
For some , it is a new level of fly tying , a new challenge .
For me , it is a means to continue to enjoy my passion as I was healing from an injury .

I must say that tying in hand brought a new understanding in material preparation and placement . I now truly understand thread/material tension when wrapping . My flies have never been more durable , whether I tie with or without the vise . Another cool thing is I can tie sitting beside my wife and kids on the couch while watching TV . There are no more stares or "evil eyes" like before in the tying room .... it's not even an issue how many flies I tie now

Yes Mike you are truly one of the masters that I aspire to and look forward to each and everyone of your creations.

Again I am simply curious and deeply in awe of the talent that it must take to complete one of these gems.

I hope that your condition is better and glad to see that something as simple as pain will not keep one of the good guys out.

We need more like you. Hope you enjoyed the BEP that I sent you a while back and hope to get back east and do some trib fishing.

Why spey fish instead of bait fish?

Why fish classics on a floating line instead of tubes on T-12?

Its a different method subject to preference.

PS. I ride a bike instead of drive a car for transport because I find it enjoyable, it keeps me fit, I save money on gas, I don't feel lazy, and quite frankly I find the over consumption of oil to be pathetic at best.

Its a preference thing. I'll try it one day.

You can try my bamboo anytime. You are on your own for the pipe.
