In the pink ..

Un-truder in Pink:

I have used 3 posts for this intruder-style tube, and the supportive posts are hackles, rather than dubbing balls.

Recipe:

Tube: plastic 2.5mm od 35mm long
Thread: 14/0 GG sheer
Rear post: silver badger
Rear ‘wing’: white/natural raccoon dog tail fur tied ‘in the round’
Body: rear ½; pearl straggle fritz; front ½; bright pink wool
Rib: medium oval silver tinsel twist over each body section
Middle post: bright pink cock hackle
Middle 'wing': bright pink marble fox tied ‘in the round’
Front post: red cock hackle
Front 'wing': red raccoon dog hair
Accent ‘legs’: 4 bunches quartered around the tube, of Amherst centre tail plus flash, each bunch consisting of 2 fibres each of natural (undyed), red, and bright pink Amherst, plus 2 strands of pearl mylar flash
Collar: deep purple dyed saddle hackle
Head: glo-brite floss #4 (deep fluo red)
Varnish: clear

Steps:

Load the plastic tube into the tube vice, heat flare the front end, and start with the 14/0 GG sheer thread – add a dab of varnish to secure

Select a well-marked silver badger hackle

Tie in the badger hackle near its tip

After doubling, wrap the hackle

Use a couple of thread wraps to sweep the hackle

Select the natural raccoon dog tail section

Select a small bunch of the raccoon dog hair

Tease out the underfur – this underfur can be later used as natural dubbing

The thinned out bunch

Part II

Tie in the bunch of hair ‘in the round’

Trim the XS hair, and secure the remainder to the tube with further thread wraps, then tie in a length of the oval silver tinsel

Tie in a length of pearl straggle fritz

Wrap the straggle fritz in close touching turns as the rear ½ of the body, sweeping the mylar back with each turn

Wrap the oval silver tinsel in open even turns over the straggle fritz as a rib, being careful to pick out the mylar with each turn

Select a cerise pink cock hackle

Tie in the pink hackle near its tip

After doubling, wrap the hackle for the middle post

Take a couple of thread wraps to sweep the hackle

Part III

Select a bunch of pink marble fox

The base of the marble fox shows how dense the underfur is

Using the dubbing needle, tease out the fox underfur

The bunch having had the underfur teased out, and the underfur itself (could later be used as dubbing)

Tie in the pink fox ‘in the round’

Trim the XS fox, the secure the remainder with thread wraps

Tie in a length of the oval silver tinsel

Select then tie in a single strand of pink wool

Wrap the pink wool as the front ½ of the body, followed by the silver tinsel as a rib

Part IV

Select a red cock hackle, tie it in near the tip, double the fibres, and wrap as the front post

Select a small bunch of red raccoon dog tail fur, and after teasing out the underfur, tie it ‘in the round’

Trim the XS, and secure with a dab of varnish

Select the individual Amherst fibres – this is one bunch of the four to be quartered around the tube

Tie in the Amherst bunches, together with the 2 strands of pearl mylar flash per quarter, and add a dab of varnish

Select a purple dyed saddle hackle, and tie this in near the tip

Wrap & sweep the purple hackle as the final collar

Switch threads, and finish the head with the red glo-brite floss, and varnish x 3

The completed un-truder, with shades of pink, and swept as may be anticipated in a river current

hope you like

Nice Fly ,

I notice you used 'saddle hackle' ... what is the difference between 'schlappen' and regular saddle hackle ?

Schlappen feathers are just the webbiest softest feathers from the saddle, so really are a subset of the whole saddle
