I was gonna wait till next months fly challenge to attempt my first married wing, but after seeing the materials list I figured I had better start practicing. What a pain! Definitely the most challenging fly I have tried so far. After my first 3 wings blew up this one finally stuck. I am pretty happy with it, but it needs a lot of work. Any tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

This looks really good to me. I swore at my vise no less than 3 times on my first strip wing so i can only imagine what its like with married slips. I would be thrilled if this my first attempt. You'll have this dialed in in no time.

Devon,

I agree with Riverborne. This is really quite nice. I'd make the tail less tall and be careful about not having only thread between the throat hackle tie-off and the wing tie-in. But overall, this is not bad at all. Yes, they are a pain to learn how to tie in the wing so it does't blow up and stays together, but once you get it, you have learned a skill that will serve you well.

With an offer like that of Hunt-man, you now have a reason (or excuse if you prefer) to tie a dozen of this fly for him. Then you can take the money you earn and buy some more materials to tie more married wings. Plus as an added bonus, you will get better at tying married wings from the practice you'll get from tying a dozen of the same pattern.

Seriously, take him up on his offer, it will serve you well in you journey to tying better married wings. Be careful though, they do become addictive once you start getting down tying in the married wings. Plus, learning how to do these will impact all your other fly tying in a good way. Welcome to the addiction known as married wing tying.

NO WORRIES! It looks like you didn't pinch the wing close enough to where you set it because the slips rolled on you. If you draw the thread around the wing in between your fingers, you will compress the fibers down, rather than rolling them onto the hook. Keep at it! Here was my first attempt 5 years ago. And by no means want to hijack your thread, I"m just posting these for encouragement because you're downing on yourself!

Sorry the pic's so small.

This is one after a couple years practice.

Don't give up! It will make you a better wet fly tyer and add even more weapons to, what appears to be, an already seasoned arsenal. Rome wasn't built in a day!! -Jamie
