So with all the great tiers out there on this forum I ask this question about intruder style flies... What is the preferred way to tie the hook loop? With fire line? Mono? Wire? I've used fireline for a few years but sometimes feel it hangs low on the pattern and may not be in line with the swing. Any and all feedback is welcome. Pictures are even better.
Sixty-five pound power pro.
Keeps it totally level and fits through a size 2 owner great if you pinch the braid.
If you use less weight at the head of the fly, use a section of mono to pull the braid through the eye of the hook.
(To get the fly to sink fairly level.)
I think tubes are the easiest way to tie, rig and fish intruders. I tie a loop knot and either jam the knot junction in the junction tubing, or allow it to slide all the way through and orient the hook point up.
I used to use Fireline and the like, but found the loops unstrustworthy. Tubes are fast and easy, and eyes allow the fly to be oriented with feathers or hooks as desired.
For my intruders i use simple dracron backing, strenght depending on the fly. For some teethy mosnters down here i use dyneema braided line instaed of dacron, it slides between the teeth and is not as easy to cut as dacron, but it is softer too.
I don't like the hook to hang down so I use 20lb. test Cortland "Toothy Critter Wire". It holds the hook out nice and straight off the back end of my Waddington Shanks.
I've also used .018" nylon coated stainless steel beading wire you can get at a craft store for alot cheaper. Its very similar.
I've tried several materials for the trailing hooks and have settled on 30lb fireline. It seems to hold the hook out well and is not overly thick, still allowing hooks to be replaced.
I like the toothy critter as well. I've recently been using beading wire and that seems to work nice although not quite as stiff as the toothy critter.
Well that's almost one option per person so far... I like it! Thanks for all the input. I will try a couple of the suggestions and get back to you all.
.019" 21strand nylon coated beading wire from the craft store.....works for me!
