I've been to the end of the internet and back looking for claret bucktail. anyone have a source?
Absent that, anyone have a source for a good claret acid dye?
Thanks,
Gary
Well,
edgeangling.com [non-sponsor url removed]has the biggest selection of bucktail I know of and they don't seem to have Claret.
jacquard makes very good acid dyes for use with fly tying materials and their 611 Vermilion dye looks to me to be a close match to Claret. Of course that's only on my computer screen so I'm not sure if it's really close....

You might have to mix more than one dye to get the exact color you want if this isn't close enough for your taste. Hope this helps.

I like the Jacquard dyes as well, and get them from Dharma. Guess I'll try a couple colors from them (and stupid me, sent them an order for some yellows YESTERDAY). One of the fellows from this forum noted to someone in a prior thread that the Jacquard Burgundy made a nice deep claret, too. Looks like a mix and match proposition. thanks for the advice!

If you dye whole or partial tails with scarlet; add a very small tad of black and brown, the hair that is in the area of the tail where it turns to brown will take on a deep claret red color. The white hail will be acceptable but you should run some tests using small hanks of hair till you get it where you want it. I have used Rit Dye to do this and kept the solution at just below the boil for about 5 minuets before letting the hair sit for an undetermined period. I just keep checking till it is dark enough.
I have been painting since 1976 and even though Rit is just fabric dye I have used my skills at blending materials to produce many colors that I could otherwise not have. Good luck with making your flavor of claret,
Ard
