I like the colour mix of black & blue . The body hackle is Melanastic Pheasant flank and the throat is Melanastic Pheasant breast . The flank feathers are black with a purple/navy blue sheen , while the throat hackle is shades of three different browns with a greenish sheen . The feathers are really sexy !! I tied the wings in the more traditional Dee fashion as well .
I apologize for the poor quality photos , they were taken with my BlackBerry ...... my Fuji program crashed today
Yes , that is the hook .... my favorite Dee Iron for "fishing" flies . The hook compliments both Dee style and old school Spey patterns like the Kings , Speals and Raichis using bronze mallard for wings :smokin:
I really prefer a sparse dressed fly over a full dressed , especially for fishing Dave . I tend to take a full dress salmon fly and remove/modify minor details ... "dress it down" to suit my fishing preference . I also like the rear of the fly to attract attention ..... that's the business end :hihi:
Man Oh Man! Love that black and blue. I am betting it won't be long before that baby takes a long cool drink. Is there a rule of thumb for the width of a dee wing?
I hope you are right Phil , would really hope the waters open up soon !!
As far as "rule" , I don't know of any , maybe Russ or Frank might chime in here . On a Dee Iron this big , I prefer my wings to be between 3/16" to 1/4" at the base .
Lovely, simply lovely. The way a dee fly ought to be tied in my opinion, nice and sparse with the illusion of bulk. Helps them sink, makes them easier to cast, and helps them have a bit more movement when swung.
There really isn't a set rule for wing width with dee wings. Frank did a good job of describing what most of us do. Dee wings ought to be slim and not bulky, but there is no good standard measurement. I suppose the best way to get yourself in the ballpark is to either do as Frand suggested and measure the width, or make the width of each side's wing about 1/4-1/3 or the hook gape. You need to make sure the wing doesn't slip down on the sides of the hook, so the wing slips are different sizes depending on the size of the hook. I'd prefer to see dee wings a little too slim rather than too wide.
