You guys are going to get me started with these patterns, I haven't tied much since last summer. I liked Marty's purple wet fly and made a few of them and I can see this as a hair wing in my future. I tied it on a size 4 because I use them for trout & char here.
Thanks
I made some hair wing models too, I have no clue why the lighting is so different on this picture but you can still make out what it is; weird, same aperture, shutter, light, weird.

I'll do some more tonight and edit them in, I didn't even notice that. I just put the two slips together and they were bent the way they are mounted. I just strapped them down and lacquered em off, Doh
Alright then, we have that settled and I made some with hair wings too Rock. I like the copper black thing and am making a pair that are simpler. No butt, and no rib over the tinsel just wire over the hackle and sticking with the hair. This just may turn out to be a good fly for me.
Thanks for the great SBS Rocky! I had to sub a few things. All I have at the moment is gold hooks, so I added a very small tag to separate the tinsel from the hook. I also used gold mylar instead of copper and mallard flank instead of guinea. This is my first strip wing, hopefully the next will turn out better
Realized I was the first person to post after Dec Hogan so I went back and tried to primp my fly a little....still cant get the hackle to separate right. Its all clumpy

If that is the first you ever did you are obviously good at this. I've been fishing these type wet flies for a long time and I don't do as well as you at making them. I might add that you choose a small hook and I can tell you that makes it harder to tie as well as you have done.
Nice, really nice fly tying there
Ard
PS; Dec your fly is also a beauty and it looks like you are doing fine from here too.
Well I just tied one but forgot the JC... DOH! Well ill post it tomorrow anyways and see what you think. great flies guys!!! Love the small tag Dec. And goose shoulder butt? Please explain this one to me,
I wouldn't get too worked up about the length of the wing there. I've had a bunch of salmon and some stray trout get hung up on flies that were far from perfect. I always just tied for myself and if the fly hooked good to me I was proud of it. Then came the Internet forum and digital cameras, next you get a photo bucket account and figure out how to put a fly online................. You click & scroll through the sites and threads and start to feel that somehow what has been working for years is somehow a thing you are ashamed to show to people.
Don't get me wrong here, fly tiers like Rocky and many others on this forum helped me clean up my act but as you can see I stopped way short of perfection. Your fly looks so much better than the ones I tie that it's kinda painful to hear you say that there is something wrong with what you did. All of the flies I see here and I do mean 'all' of them are great works. When you think back on the 'Dark Ages' before the Internet many times the people who were striving for this level of tying skill were preparing to publish an index for such patterns. Those who were simply fishing with home made salmon flies did their best and then took them to the river. I spent a lot of years where I tied then ended up with the salmon flies in storage for up to a year before I could take a trip to the rivers where the fish were. I'm fortunate in that I found a way to get into them but I still have to sit on flies for 6 months at a time while I wait out the winter. Thanks to places & people like I found here I can learn some more tricks and step up the craftsmanship in the flies that get tied up over the down time these days. What living here has taught me is that I need to tie flies that will take a pounding and not come apart on me when the action is such that I have no time to waste changing a fly so I work on that on the patterns.
Your fly is a beauty and I sure hope you get to have a day you won't forget with that one tied on.
Sorry I did not have anything black for the wing, wanted to play so I tied with what I had on hand.
