First Classic,

Yesterday was a big day for my tying, finally got a new vise. So to break in a new vise what better way than to try a new fly. So I gave the Silver doctor a shot. At first it was just to fish but after I finished I was pretty happy with it so I decided to post. Clearly it needs work but a good place to start.
Anything tips to get me started would be greatly appreciated. I had a lot of trouble with the GP crest and of course setting the wing.

Thanks guys,
Matt

For a first time this fly came out really good,Next time try putting a lil english on the wing it gives that a classic look,by english what i mean is curvature a lil sweep to the wing.I love you hackle its what i prefer for collar.

Looks great man, my wings do that too and I think it is more about vice time and practice then tricks...same for toppings. At least that is what I'm telling myself. On your underwing, from the classic geometry that 2nd bar on the tippet should match up with the butt. I usually don't pay much attention to that, but it was just what I was told by the Classic Masters. Out of curiosity, what size hook and is the wing turkey?

Some fine work there young man :smokin::smokin:

For the topping , give a little "pinch" or bend in the stem at the tie in point after you strip the crest to size ;)

It must be the red mud on the island !! You boys from PEI can sure tie a pretty fly !!!

Well done Matt , be proud of that fly :)

Very well done Matt. It is very difficult to troubleshoot wing mounts without being on hand. A flat tie point helps with the angle, but crunching and collapsing of fibers can be attributed to any number of issues. There are many methods that can be employed. I sarted with Radencich's technique but have since moved on to others. I suggest checking out his DVD, or better yet, tie with a few gurus who have got it down pat

Turkey seems to be eaiser to work with and a 1.5 is not so small that it requires goose. Also, not sure if you noticed it or not, but when I've tied on up eye hooks, I've had the eye mess up the butts of my wing just enough before I finally secured that my wing did funny stuff. Good luck and keep it up.

On more thing, the number of slips relative to hook size is another area to play with. I think I read that the bigger flies ( 3/0+) have wings with 20-30 slips in there, but I could be wrong on the number. Play with that as well.

**Oh, one more thing...

Most of what I think I know may or may not be right, but I think I know it.

Alonzo if I could get my hands on some turkey I'd much rather tie with it but the shop here doesn't carry it and I'm yet to order any. Great advice though anything at all helps, because for me right now I didn't have much to go by.
Rich I haven't forgotten about you buddy! I'll get those flies to you within the next week or two

Really nicely done and surprisingly so considering you've not had consulted anyone, any written description, any SBS, or any of the several excellent DVD's now available on tying married wings. I'm impressed.

Yes, the wing could be a bit lower, but it is tied in correctly and of the correct length. Yes, the tippet underwing could be a little longer as Rob mentioned, but there is nothing wrong with the way you did it. The only things I'll add to what others have suggested are: 1) I'd move the tip and tag back a little bit. I'd start the tip right at the root of the barb (the place where the barb first starts to move up away from the hook point). This will fill in the rear of the hook a little, make the body a bit longer, have the tail shortened slightly, and better ballance the wing; and 2) I'd make the wool butt and head smaller (i.e. shorter).
