Here is a style of shank type fly tied on Waddingtons this is the ever popular(with steehead here on the GL tribs) olive shank type 'truder.I am tying several of these,and different colour variations of this style...gett'n ready for the steelhead spring run.
Mike this is very much an intruder it is tied with "stations" as Ed put it both fore and aft on the fly with an under spun dubbing loop to support the sparsely tied ostrich, fore and aft, the dumbell eyes are the pocketed variety that I always use on my intruders,to take the 3D eyes. I feel predatory fish key in on certain things like the contrast of the baitfish eye as well as the lateral line,and of course general shape,so I try to represent those prominently on my intruders...when the fish are aggressive,it probably doesn't matter,they'll hit just about anything...but when they are off,spooked or otherwise choosy...I think it matters, and makes a difference,so I tie 'em this way.....sparse,light and transparent,gangly, and with a lot of movement,particularly in clearish water dirty water I tie 'em a bit thicker and dark to make a definite contrast while on the swing.
Some unsolicited advice (not a critique, so take it for what it is worth):
When rigging stingers on eye-up hooks, you should consider threading your trailer line through the bottom of the hook's eye rather than the top. By doing this, the hook shank will run (basically) in-line with the trailer line / fly.
The dubbing I used on this one is a synthetic long strand dubbing with some sparkle to it, a light tan with a coppery-pinkish slight hue to it spun up in a dubbing loop.
Here are a couple more slightly unorthodox intruders,in black and gold with and without dumbell eyes,both with JC,both have proved to be popular with steelies,lean, mean and gangly with tons of movement....no gentle takes on these,they want to kill it.:hihi:
hey bill
with the one in black,w/3d eyes,and long tail.
do you get short striked on it cuz of the long tail ,or do they slam that whole fly ,like a oyster shooter
m:hihi:e
:chuckle:....no,I forgot to mention the top black one(3-D eye) is tied on a 15mm waddington so the whole thing is a bite sized morsel...so yeah oyster shooter!!:chuckle:
hey bill;
