This is my 1st try at this style of fly. In truth, I'd never really heard of a gray ghost until I met a guy from Maine a few months ago. He said it's only the most famous streamer of all time. Pretty funny since I've been throwing flies for trout for 30 years. As famous as it apparently is, I'm not sure it has much of a following here in the rockies (or, perhaps more likely, I'm just oblivious). After he showed me how cool they were, I tracked down some hooks and started looking into the style. Pretty neat stuff and fun to learn some new techniques.
I was too casual picking feathers and putting my wings together so I didn't get the stems to line up quite the way I wanted. (Need a straight JC for starters). Also, I'm not sure what I did, but the wings and shoulders don't look matched right after I tied them in, even though they lined up nicely as I was piecing them together. The wings turned up and seemed to compress a little when I tied it all in on the sides of the hook. I'd rather the wing match the size and shape of the silver pheasant. Oh well. Maybe I'll get the next one to turn out a little better. Either way, it should be fun to throw on the switch this summer.
I hope it's ok.
Cheers,
Dan
