gray ghost

This is my 1st try at this style of fly. In truth, I'd never really heard of a gray ghost until I met a guy from Maine a few months ago. He said it's only the most famous streamer of all time. Pretty funny since I've been throwing flies for trout for 30 years. As famous as it apparently is, I'm not sure it has much of a following here in the rockies (or, perhaps more likely, I'm just oblivious). After he showed me how cool they were, I tracked down some hooks and started looking into the style. Pretty neat stuff and fun to learn some new techniques.

I was too casual picking feathers and putting my wings together so I didn't get the stems to line up quite the way I wanted. (Need a straight JC for starters). Also, I'm not sure what I did, but the wings and shoulders don't look matched right after I tied them in, even though they lined up nicely as I was piecing them together. The wings turned up and seemed to compress a little when I tied it all in on the sides of the hook. I'd rather the wing match the size and shape of the silver pheasant. Oh well. Maybe I'll get the next one to turn out a little better. Either way, it should be fun to throw on the switch this summer.

I hope it's ok.

Cheers,

Dan

you're too self-critical!

That really is a great looking trolling Gray Ghost! Tie it up as a casting size (on, for example, Mustad 3665A's or Daiichi 2340's, size 2, 4 and 6) and use it where you live; it'll work! I think you'll find casting that trolling style hook a real bear; the wing will get itself all wrapped up.

Again, you're fly looks grand!
Gary

P.S. Some folks (me included) tie the peacock herl in on top of the hook, before you tie in the wing sets.

kickin some east coast style

I love it and it will fish trust me i fish Rangeley area of Maine specifically the Rapid River and The Moosehead region, and this streamer fly and others tied the Rangeley way work exceedingly well .I use a Rio Windcutter 5 wt for single handers or my Gloomis Metolius Trout Spey with a Rio Windcutter WFF 5/6,and i swing these flies as well as Black Ghosts too.hold onto your rod the takes can be pretty harsh ,if deaddrifting it will seem like you are snagged up on the rocks, then the line starts bobbing ...fish on.
Landlocks love em and so do The Big Brookies.
Here in Pa the Browns And Rainbows love em as well.
great job, one thing get the wing closer to the shank and mounted at 10 and 2 and you have the way Carrie Stevens tied her flies.
