This is a light olive version of what I hope to be a series of flies with very few moving parts but plenty of promise. A far cry from some of my more labor intensive flies but still requiring good skills and proportions. A larger image is in my gallery
One thing is for sure, it does not take a lot of moving parts to entice an atlantic salmon into striking. Your fly is the essence of the simplicity that works so well with those fish. I can understand your thoughts on creating a series of them...you can extend the fly's seasonality, if you will, with a variety of color schemes. Up in New Brunswick, maybe not so much spring, but absolutely summer and fall! Pretty and practical. Really nice job.

I really like that! That would be excelllent in clear water. I like subdued colors like that in this kind of water. "Insect green" flossed or dubbed bodies have given me the best results.
I will have to try to copy that if you don't mind.
Really nice!

Very nice. It is a pleasure to see a hairwing tied sparselyand with preciseness. Very sleek but still with the illusion of bulk. There is a lot others can learn from this fly.
Rick: To answer your questions....
- the hook is a size 3 AJ
- A gape of 1/2 inch is max allowed in the Salmon River
- The hair is squirrel tail
- The fly is destined for one of my mates in a swap I had to back out of. Probably one who targets Atlantic Salmon. However, were I to fish it, I would swing it in the Saranac River during the spring Emerald Shiner run and hope to tease a landlocked to take a swipe at it.
A wicked pattern for sure. I have seen an old timer fish a fly similar to this at trout creek, just outside of Smithers B.C. for many years, same time of year, very small hook and slay the steelhead.

Nice work, C
Dave,
Thank you for you reply do you ever tie the great flies you have been burnin out lately for NY Tribs? I wonder where the limit is concerning Alec Jackson hooks and gape width measurements.I am gonna go measure a few and see for myself, I also fish Mustad 36890 #2 i wonder if thats too wide now you got me wondering if in the past i broke the Law. I tie all my marabous on this hook and in smaller sizes i tie hairwings.
