Hello everyone! I was just wondering what color combination on your intruders have bee successful for you. I have had more luck with black than any color but I really like tying blues pinks and purples as well. Just wanted to hear some more intruder discussion. I have been reading some awesome stuff!! Any thoughts? Thanks!!
Now those are some impressive Intruders. I have never fished the Intruder but if I was to pick a color combo for winter fish it would be orange and yellow, or red and orange, with one or two hot pinks thrown in for good measure. I am not sure I agree with you thoughts on what an Intruder is but I will say you tie a mean one. I would call your ties “Intruders” without hesitation. Fine bit of engineering.
The only fish I have caught this winter on an intruder was the one pictured.
the other fish I have caught have been on pink loop leeches or purple with pink head loop leeches. for some reason I have been doing better with those... it could be a confidence thing and since I have been having good luck with loop leeches I have been using them more so thats a big part of it as well.
I need to tie up one with purple and a pink head and I would fish the heck out of that fly for sure!
Thanks for the comments guys! So it sounds like all colors work:chuckle: One thing is for sure no matter what fly, confidence is a big part of it! I feel sooo much more confident with my black intruders it's crazy! Interesting to hear that yellow and orange is a favorite amongst some, I will come up with something and put it up! Good stuff, keep the comments coming!
those are killer better go get some testing done this weekend some rivers are looking like they should be plently fishable I am hopeing to get out sunday.
These flies from all the tyers who posted them are very nice INTRUDERS. It is nice seeing the fly put together as Ed designed it. Regarding color combos, you can make them of any color or combination thereof you desire. I'd stick to the time-honored, proven effective colors for winter steelhead. Orange/Red, Orange/Yellow, Orange/Red, Orange/pink, Red/Yellow, Purple/Pink, Black/Blue, Purple/Red, Blue/Red, Black/Orange, all Orange, all Pink, all Black, all Purple,
I still haven't caught a steelie yet, but I've been tying black / pink, blue / pink, purple / pink, just straight pink, olive / white, orange / pink, chartruerse / blue, chartruse / black.
LoL - Seems like a lot now that I think about it. I guess it's good to have you bases covered to fish all levels / clarities.
On a side note, I really like the wrabbit head. I either do a wrabbit or seal.
Great ties there in the Thread opener. But what really sets them apart (for me) is the use of 'the eyes.' Other than an 'odd one off' don't recall seeing that done before.
All of those patterns look like they would have excellent movement in the water! really nice work!!!
As for colours I think our fish might be different over here in the Great lakes. I think they probably see a lot more flies (and a lot of roe bags, etc). I really like olive in clear water especially higher up the watershed. I've also had success on pink and black in coloured up water.
talking about great lakes and olive... It was a killer color here last fall. I mean 4 fish days here on a spey rod... I call it a good day.. You missin Black and orange one!
These are my go to colours,I have other colour combos, but here on the river I fish these colours have proved to be absolutely deadly!!!
Here are versions that veer away from my un weighted formula,I've added SMALL lead eyes, for when flows are really up and rocking otherwise it's no weight and let the tip and line manipulation as well as sparseness of the tie get me down into the strike zone.
