Articulating Tube Fly

Here's.a quick articulating tube fly I tied up. The tail of the fly is a copy of John Barr's Slump Buster. The front half of the fly is a copy of a Sculpin pattern posted by Black Francis.

I hope the articulation will give the fly more movement.

Stacking the tubes was a conversation that I recently had with a friend. He said he saw some video footage and tutorial on it, maybe at one of the local shows. He's convinced, now tying on small tubes, and puts some together to make articulated patterns. He tied up two spiders. Each was a dubbing ball, deer hair collar and some amherst fibers. He then separated them by a tube "spacer" in the middle that was simply wrapped tinsel strands and schlappen. Made his two spiders end up looking like an articulated "intruder-like" pattern. He's going on a "mix and match" type of theme. I think the idea is interesting, and more movement has to be better than less movement, right? I'll be watching his progress and picking through his fly box whenever possible.

Articulation on small tubes

I'm totally convinced that small tubes provide more movement. I was talking with a friend of mine and he suggested placing a small bead between the front and rear tube so the flush ends of the tubes wouldn't "lock up". I'm gonna give it a try.

I'd love it if you could post a picture or two of tour friends fly.

James, he let me peek but not touch. I'll have to see what I can get out of him. He appears here from time to time. Maybe he'll read it and add a photo or two.
