Tied with out a vice

I recently watched "The Lost World of Mr. Hardy" and really enjoyed it. During the video it shows Tom Wethern (Spelling?) tying a green highlander without a vice. I was amazed. I rewound it and watched it again. Finally, I had to try it.

So here it is, the first and possibly only fly I have ever tied or ever will tie without a vice. It went better than I expected. The hardest part for me was the dubbing loop for the body. It's not the best fly I have ever tied but it's not the worst either. I'm kind of happy with how it turned out.

Anyone else ever tie without a vice?

Allen,

You did a great job with that. I tied some back in the 80's when I obsessed with all things Atlantic. I found that provided you had the foresight to make all your wing-sets in advance it wasn't too bad. having good dexterity in both hands is a must but I could set my wings better by hand than I sometimes do using a vise.

All told, I will not be going back to vise-less tying until after the Apocalypse :D

I remember seeing footage of Lee Wulff, at a quite advanced age tying a royal wulff without a vise. Wish I remember where that was from. It was pretty amazing. It looked great!

Your fly looks amazing. Better than ones listed for sale on most websites and catalogs!

That's a great job for a first shot in hand. The Yellow Torrish was the first fly I tied in hand. That mess can be seen periodically on John Mc's site. It pops up everyonceinawhile. You gotta use Pearsall's Gossamer and Cobbler's wax, man! Bobbins are cheating! Just kidding! Good work. -Jamie
