Hey guys never done any akroyds or Dees with feathers. Where do I get started? what feathers should I get?? I got alll the collar material and hackle just wondering about the feather wings on them?? what is it/ what is the best to make em with?? any and all suggestions help thanks abunch guys!
You can use a wide variety of winging feathers for dee style wings from turkey(both natural and dyed),goose shoulder,swan,amherst,golden pheasant,ringneck pheasant,etc,etc. You can even get fancy and tie with Argus,kori and florican. Hope this helps you out.-Matt-
Matt is correct...however to learn, Turkey was the easiest for me.
Search Dee in this forum and check out Salmon Chaser's threads. That dude ties a wicked mean Dee. All in all, just tie one up and post it. You'll get good guidence here, but do a little research first.
Definitely start out with Turkey tails if you can get your hands on some. Try to tie the strips of turkey onto the hook shank by the very butts. To do this I size the hook to the wings not the other way around.
Horizontal thread pressure as opposed to vertical thread pressure when mounting the wings will help out big time as well.
