Ive been wanting to tie the winters hope and finally got around to it today . Im hoping the rivers thaw a bit next week and I can take it for a test drive. let me know what you guys think for improvements . cheers Joe
Nice job!
You even added thing olive bucktail/calftail. Most people don't even know that was part of the original pattern!
Try using rooster cape for the wings if you want that sleek look.
Actually McMillan used golden-olive calftail (never bucktail) for the topping. He used this because he didn't know how to mount a GP crest feather centered over the wing and laying right along the wing. Golden-olive is close in color to a GP crest feather, and since he knew how to tie it to lie properly, that is what he used.
Olive calftail, although it looks OK on the WINTER'S HOPE is incorrect and too dark. Golden-olive is just that, gold with just a touch of light olive it in. We here on this side of the pond tend not to know what color it actually is and just assume olive will do when olive is way too dark for golden-olive.
This is another of my top ten choice of fly patterns and you have made a really nice version.
I didn't know about the calf tail crest, maybe because most of the recipes published on the net are already changed from the original one, i'm glad this information came out, specially because i plan to draw the winters hope one of these days.
thanks everyone for the kind words ! the wings are metz soft hackles and I would guess that they will thin down some on the swing for a bit more of a thinner profile . cant wait to swing'em , thanks again fellas
Very nice! I like the wide feather variation you chose. Somewhere there is a thread with all the WINTERS HOPE tied by board members, it would be nice to see yours added to it.
I'm also optimistic for a warmup. Made it out 02-05 and have felt much better this week. A follow up dose should finish off the doldrums
