Both flies are beauties. Hmmm...I'm not sure if I like the wide tinsel look however. To each their own I suppose.

Oh boy, sooner or later someone had to tie it ...
First off let me say these are tied very well
Excellent profile, material density and flow is spot on ... tied long and thin - kudos!!

However, this is one pattern that makes me gag ... I'm being honest here and nothing is directed towards the tier and no disrespect is intended at all
I can't understand why, I think claret and green is an excellent combination ... it's possibly the pattern itself. This pattern is my Kryptonite I guess.
I first saw it on Colin's site, then my good friend Dwayne tied it and posted it here ... many moons ago. I didn't like it then and things haven't changed.
Later that year, we met up on an east coast salmon river and he said that he had a fly for me to try. He pulls out the very fly he displayed here and said, "I really want you to fish this fly" with a grin from ear to ear. I nearly choked, it was even uglier in my eyes in person. We laughed, had some whiskey and he put that fly on his cap for the rest of the day and taunted me with it. No fish for either of us that day.

I agree Mike. The Ugly Betty of the Dee fly world. Thanks for the feedback on the wide tinsel. You both might have provided enough affirmation that perhaps there was a reason it was left undiscovered for so long. PM me your addresses. They will be in the mail Monday.

I liked this dark, gloomy pattern since first seeing it in John Shewey's book on Spey and Dee patterns. There's another version - same pattern in different arrangement similar to the Tartan fly with a hackle following the heron through the body.

Wicked flies.
