I tie these pot-bellies on heavy gauge hooks, like Daiichi 2151 hooks. These are classified as irons, being 2x short and 3x heavy wire.
They are a great platform for this style fly and many other shrimp/prawn/squid-type flies.
I tie them sparse and thin, a bit of flash and a tail much like yours of either fine bucktail, finn coon, fine polar bear or whatever I feel is going to dance in the current. The rhea is a nice touch, I may give that a try. I use either soft hen or most times it's pheasant rump.
I switch up the colours a lot, but black/blue/copper is great, olive/black/brown and so is claret/purple/GP breast. These things dance and sway. During high, clear water, swing one across, let it dangle, then swim it back across river with a big mend. Bounce it off the large rocks and swim in behind them to lurking steelhead
I will be amazed if it makes it past the dangle before a steelhead eats it
