Replacement for a Broken AJ

AJ's break on me sometimes, right at the barb.... and I am sure I am not alone.

I found these flies in a box the other day. I really liked the purple and silver one, and I remember being a little upset on the river when I stared at the broken hook.

Anyway, I decided to replace it yesterday.... but this time on a #3 BH, a fly for fishing...

It's my first married wing in a while, and I am out of practice.
Too many turns of fine oval at the tip, so not enough tag, and a rough job lining up the fibre tips. I doubled up on the kingfisher on both the veiling and the cheeks, as I find they tend to be fragile and can fall off after some hard fishing. I also made a few slight changes to the wing. All in all it's nice to have one of these back in my box.
Thought I would share the result.

Hang in there everyone...
Stay safe.

Mike

wow that's beautiful, I've had a lot of 2051 and 2441's break at the same place, i think its from putting the barb down in most of my cases, that weakens the hook, but never had it happen to a blue heron, cameron

If you have time, a Dremmel tool is the best option for debarbing hooks.
Puts no pressure on the iron and takes a second to do.
You can do 25 hooks in less than a minute.

That is one beautiful fly! Wow, for being somewhat out of practice, move to the head of the line for perfection! Great color selections and skills.

Watch your fingers if you're using a Dremmel in a hurry!
