Dragon's Tooth Rendition

I have always liked the look of this fly, but had never tried to tie one. I had some time to hit the river and decided to give it a go. I guess the wing is more of a prawn style and departs from the original...but as they say, "my hook, my rules".

I felt really confident that this fly would fish well and tied it on for the first pass through the pool. A third of the way down the pool. I felt a solid tug and my Farlex stated screaming...

I will definately be tying more of these!

Hope everyone is staying safe and sane.

Nate

Typically the wing is tented and gives a great profile for high or stained flows.
The wing you fashioned is more prawn-like ... excellent for clear or low water.
I like the variation a lot, very shrimpy-sexy

The proof is in the pudding as they say, well done laddie !!
I think I will put a couple of these variations in my wallet too

A fine tie, and a finer result Nate! Hopefully the weather change brings a few more in before the coastal rivers button up for the season.

Would you mind posting the recipe for your version?

Golden pheasant skins are perhaps the most useful of all bird skins available today. Perfect for the shellback shrimpy things. Your fly is excellent, even the difficult critics agree.

Here is the recipe;

I subbed gold embossed tinsel for the ribs and counter ribbed with fine silver oval.

I subbed bleach burned and dyed purple goose shoulder for the the schlappen.

A smidge of fluroescent purple ice dub was added in the thorax area.

The goose hackle was tied in two-thirds up, only hackling the front third, for a sparser fly.

The wing was tied in the same way one would tie in bronze mallard on an original spey fly, using the same amout and type of feathers called for in Mike Kinney's recipe below.

The teal was tied in as a v-shaped throat/beard on the underside of the hook shank, rather than wrapped in the round and pulled down, again for sparseness.
