Silver Speal - variation

One of my favorite winter offerings :)

Pretty raggy lookin', but I think it fishes best that way.
The turkey wing creates a higher profile than the original pattern, I rather the mallard strips be tied in as sides than tied in as a wing.
This pattern sinks very well, very little to hold it back. The long, flowing coque hackles just dance in the current.

I think I see a little bit of Black King in your pattern. The embossed silver rib improves the fly. The bronze mallard strips being used as sides to a turkey wing is a great idea for contrast.

The picture looks like a stream side shot with your Millar Mitts on.

Thanks for sharing, Mike.

Thank you for the votes of confidence gents, however despite my best efforts, this pattern did not find a player for me yesterday. It was two new patterns that brought success :D

Doug, yes, definitely a standing in the river shot :hihi:
The difference between the Silver Speal and Black King is the King series requires a gold and silver rib. You will notice that I hackle my Spey flies in standard fashion and do not cross wrap. Instead I add a oval tinsel and follow the oval tinsel with the hackle. This is my way in protecting the hackle from the fishes teeth.

Dan, I connect these flies with a large Double Surgeon's Loop knot, usually about 3" long. Thread through the loop eye and around the fly to tighten.

Good catch !! On this fly no.
I do tie this pattern with the separated strips usually, but for late winter or cold water swinging, I prefer a bigger profile along with the movement.
This fly's wing was fashioned much like a traditional wet fly. I do the same for the Gold Purpy, Purple King, Red King and Lady Caroline ... all excellent winter GL's steelhead flies.

This time I was able to get a photo :)

The Silver Speal is my confidence, this time tied on an old stock #3/0, CS10/3 iron, re-shaped to elongate the shank and as always, de-barbed :)
More "fluff" in the butt this time up to the second rib. I found a choice feather, very thin shaft with lots of "fluff" and all natural black :smokin:
A strong better than average wild fish hanging out in the softer water up close to a downed tree. It took mid swing ... my favorite take :)
Water was running high and cold with just enough stain to help this fish feel safe enough to take a grab.

I fished one today in your honor Mike. Looks like yours was a bit more effective!
