Mike Kinney's Dragon's Tooth variation

Here's one that's a little more in season than the skater I recently posted, the Dragon's Tooth. This variation uses lavender ice dub for the body and orange feather wings under the GP for a little extra pop. This schlappen has some super long fibers, so I'm looking forward to testing this one out to see how it swims.

Cheers, Jake

Jake that is fantastic
Nothing wrong with a little extra POP I say ... in fact, I encourage extra POP
Very nice material placement and an excellent profile too !!
This one is a winner for sure, great inspiration too !!

Thanks Mike! Definitely nothing wrong with a little extra something. I’m hoping it’s a winner as well. I’ll find out next weekend!

As good as that looks in the vise, I predict it will be irresistible in the water. Would love to see a fish-eye view of that swimming across a tailout.

Great job mounting the GP rump, the fly looks fantastic. I struggle with GP flank and rump winging. It drives me crazy. Any tips?

Be well,
Shannon

Edit: the hackle tip wing mount is straight fire. Doesn't get any better.

It'll be in the water next weekend, we shall see then! I'm hoping it's a winner.

Coming from you, Shannon, that means a lot! I appreciate the kind words.

I always struggled with GP as well, until recently when I was looking through Sean Dahlquist's flies and noticed he typically had just the slightest amount of the feather fibers tied down rather than just the stem. It seems this helps control and seat the feather well. I also find it helps prevent the feather from flaring too much, as they are naturally broad feathers. These particular feathers were choice, the stems were super thin and enabled me to neatly stack the wing. I also tie them in one at a time, with just one loose thread wrap on each side. Then I position them to where I like and secure them in. Hope that is coherent enough to help!

Tight lines my friend!

I think GP winging will always haunt me. You make it look easy.

Sean Dahlquis is the best in the game in my opinion. He's so good it's nuts. I was really fortunate, Sean and friends surprised me with an original painting and flies.

Man that's super cool. That painting is awesome, and the flies are obviously top notch. I absolutely agree, I think Sean is the best in the biz. It really is absurd how good he is.
